Don't all these "warden makes convicts fight etc." movies just all date back to The Longest Yard with Burt Reynolds, but with a football game instead of a fight?
Mean Machine with Vinnie Jones was an awesome variation on this using a soccer game. Shit, it was basically a Longest Yard remake...
In a related note, Farina and I recently watched "Let's Go to Prison" with Will Arnett and Dax Sheppard. It was like all the prison movie cliches all lumped together in one movie.
Not the funniest movie I've ever seen, but damn fine none the less. Of course it had the prison sanctioned fight to the death... _________________ Damn! |

No, he's an actor, and a fantastic one at that. The President is undeniably scary as hell. |
Awesome....like I said, I'm down for the UNRATED DVD when it hits. Call me crazy, but I'd rather see a film how it was INTENDED to be seen, and not some network suit's cut, you know? |

Understood completely. I think what will primarily be missing is the nudity and the profanity (of which there is a veritable fuckload) -- Spike seems to quite enjoy the overt bloodletting, so most of the violence should remain intact.
Honestly, these TV movies have on the whole been creatively liberating. As opposed to features, where the development process usually takes years, and you have to deal with armies of people who want to put their fingers in the pie, television projects almost always have a locked shooting date. And they have to make that date or they start losing money. This of course means that the majority of your best stuff actually makes it to the screen without being worked to death in the notes process. In the case of DEATH MATCH, the film follows the script almost verbatim -- there's very little derivation from what we had on the page. The only way to even come close to accomplishing this in features is to work completely outside the studio system, and even then it's no guarantee.
Incidentally, the prison in DEATH MATCH and the events that transpire inside it are loosely based on the real-life horrors that occurred in California's Corcoran State Prison.
Read some scary shit about Corcoran here:

Not to mention that the notion of an undercover man going inside as a convict goes back to the underrated BRUBAKER, though that film had a rather different spin than ours.
MEAN MACHINE was a blast by the way, and it WAS a remake of LONGEST YARD -- they even properly credit that film's writers. |

Actually, this isn't a shot from the film itself. It was taken during a break right after Johnny flubbed one of the lines we'd written. So Franco and I, uhm, had some words with him. _________________ "According to witnesses, testimony and evidence...this massacre was the work of ninjas!" |

Well, it was bound to happen. Death Match had its title changed. I have no idea why. It's all business. Anyway, it's now called Ring Of Death.
Same great taste, fresh new label. Ask for it by name! |

Ring of Death???
Death Match was a badass title! Ring of Death sounds like a DTV Van Damme movie.
