An interesting alternative perspective, Joe.
As stated, I didn't finish Vamphyrric, so my opinion is obviously incomplete. But the first 100 hundred pages were annoyingly trite, featuring characters that almost seemed to be caricatures of small-village English folk. The dialogue also made me cringe, and though the great evil had yet to properly emerge, it was shaping up to be anything other than "great" or even memorable.
That said, that's a half-assed opinion and I should read the rest of the book to see if things improve. Your defence has made me interested enough to do that.
