Sony Denies Lack of PS3 Interest
The company sees piles of its new console sitting on shelves as a good thing.

February 28, 2007 -

Sony is claiming that the stacks of unsold PlayStation 3s on store shelves is actually a sign of how well the company is handling supply - not an indication that there is a lack of interest in the new console.

Speaking to Reuters, Jack Tretton, chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment America, says he is pleased to see so many unsold PS3s sitting on shelves. "It's a testament to the fact that we've been able to manufacture and ship units on a greater pace than any previous console," Tretton said.

"Our goal is to fill shelves across the United States. Our goal is not to have empty shelves, it's to have full shelves. If we have empty shelves, that's one less consumer who could have bought a PlayStation 3."

While the PS3 is relatively easy to find, the Nintendo Wii remains elusive to consumers. NPD data for January revealed that the Wii outsold the PS3 on an almost two to one ratio.

So glad those shelves are full! Laughing

Honestly, can those remarks be any more hollow?

Oh, there's plenty of PS3 interest. There just isn't $600 a pop worth of interest.

Sony lost most of its exclusives...so they may be fucked.
Why play Grand Theft Auto 4 on a $600 PS3, when you can play the same game on a $400 XBox 360.

I suppose that is a step up from offering $1,200 to anyone that can find a PS3 available on store shelves.

Yeah ... it is too bad that he didn't come through on that offer when 8 or 9 stores (that had PS3s in stock) were found instantly.

I really do not understand the Sony logic. The company believes that it is the king of all mountains and that gives them the ability to put out substandard products. Strange

I love Gabe Newell's suggestion that they should just scrap the whole thing and do a "Do-Over".
