Great news for Ozzfest fans. While I'm typically not thrilled about corporate sponsor tie-ins with concerts, this is definitely a step in the right direction.

--------------------------

This year's hard-rocking OzzFest at different venues across the United States will sport ticket prices everyone can afford: free.

Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne said the 12th annual multi-band concert would be free, thanks to corporate sponsorships. The Osbournes and tour producer Live Nation announced the news during the Concert Industry Consortium in Los Angeles.

"For the last few years," Sharon Osbourne said, "ticket prices have steadily climbed as artists demand more and more money for summer tours. We certainly want everybody to make money, however, we also want the kids to be able to afford to come out and have an incredible experience."

The tour kicks off July 7 in Los Angeles.

To gain admittance to a "FreeFest" concert, fans must visit Ozzfest.com or Livenation.com to locate links directing them to special sponsor sites where tickets can be secured.

Damn.

For once, I might actually consider going.
That is, assuming the line-up isn't as full of ass as it usually is.

Too bad Ozzy probably won't be playing.

I did hear Ozzy was planning on performing (it doesn't make much sense if he didn't play at a tour named for him, but anyway...).

I've never gone to any Ozzfests and I'll probably not go to this one either. I used to say, "I wouldn't go if it was free" and now it really applies. It's just not my type of music or scene.

Some of the people I've spoken to about the show being free were initially shocked, then happy, then pissed. They said the shows have always been overcrowded to the point of not being able to properly enjoy the show and now it's only going to be worse. I guess I see their point. People who don't even give a fuck about the concert will show just to socialize at a free event.

I gave up on Ozzfest. I used to go every year since 1997. Then I just got bored with all the extreme metal bands all trying to outscream each other. Every one of those bands sounds the same. I'm 32 now and I just don't care to hear about how some 22 year old hates the world.
I'm skipping it again this year. Ozzy does the same set list everytime. I can't imagine ANY big name bands playing for free. And even the free ticket price doesn't make me want to sit through the 2 hour wait to get out of the parking lot.
Milwaukee has Summerfest, http://www.summerfest.com ..which is the country's largest music festival that runs for 11 or 12 days every year. I will go to that and check out as many bands that I can.
The bands from the last 2 years of Ozzfest have sucked so bad that I just don't see how this year will be any better.
And the crowds are so big that the 2nd stage is just one big dirt storm.

Oh my. This I'll have to goto even though I hate NJ. I went in 05 and was happy that I got to see Rob Zombie,Mudvayne, Killswitch Engage, and Shadows Fall. As long as there's alteast one band playin that I like I'll go.

As a huge Iron Maiden fan, I can never go back after Eggfest. However, I'm happy for Ozzfest fans, and I agree that this is a huge step in the right direction.

The only big band I can think of who would be interested in this would be the Scorpions. Awhile ago, they were rumored to be playing it because they are actual friends with the Osbournes. Plus, they have a new CD coming out and I'm sure they would love to attract a younger audience the same way Priest and Maiden did previously.

I saw the Scorpions in 2004. They put on a good show.

Reading an issue of Classic Rock, Sharon claims it's because they paid System Of A Down so much to play last Ozzfest it cost them a $1.5 million loss.

I'd like to think it's nothing more than damage control for her treatment of Maiden last year. And the staggeringly shit-house bands they put on the bill.

God...where to start.
I have many friends who have dealt with Sharon O and I myself came dangerously close to the fire last year (at the time of the Maiden fiasco actually)

I don't want to break it all down, but the way it was explained to me, Sharon O making Ozzfest free as far as tix was actually a money making move (what isn't on her part?)

Vey sly. Very lucrative. With one hell of a back end.

Let me say this loud and clear...FUCK OZZFEST. Many second stage bands have irreperably damaged their careers by going for it and paying the out of control costs to play the second stage. Then they get regaled to 20 minute sets at 10am when no one is there to see.
