It insults Lecter fans? That's funny. I'm a Lecter fan, and I'm not insulted. Nor do the majority of Lecter fans I've come in contact with.

Are you serious? The consensus out there, among Harris and Lecter fans, is that the book is a major letdown. Google a few reviews and see what I mean.

And the INSULT here is not the attempt at a backstory, but with the story that is given. As I have said before.. it is paltry and cliche.

Read the book. Then we can discuss further, as I need to cite actual events.

All the Saw films received a rotten rating from Rotten Tomatoes, as have many of my favorite horror flicks.

I have seen the negative reviews. Many of them don't criticize the book's quality as such but the idea of the story; that is, the same problem you have with making Hannibal an antihero to sympathisize with. The reviews that make awful puns ("Hard to digest", "hard to swallow", etc) and argue that Hannibal was better off mysterious. Those I don't pay attention to. I knew ever since it came out people would be up in arms about changing Hannibal from the Anthony Hopkins archetype.

The ones I do pay attention to are the reviews which criticize Harris as a writer. One complaint is rather than a full novel it comes off as series of short vignettes.

And when I say 'majority of Lecter fans I've come across with' I'm not referring to the USA Today reviewer who went "Go cry on Oprah's couch, Tom" or the various Amazon.com reviewers, I'm referriing to the hundreds of members of a large Hannibal community I'm part of. Some are critical of the book, a lot enjoy it, but no one has said that they are insulted by Harris.

I should be getting the book before the end of this week hopefully.

That's disturbing.

More so than a community dedicated to gruesome films?

Finished it yesterday...maybe it wasn't Dickens, but it certainly wasn't bad by any stretch or the imagination or blasphemous to the series. I had some minor problems with it (such as for a prequel concerning how Hannibal came to be there's very little cannibalism present and no reasoning for doing so, save the fact that his sister was also eaten) but overall I found it to be a satisfying novel.

I thought it seemed rushed and wasn't very entertaining. A big let down for me.
