So after decades of false starts, it looks like Stephen King/Peter Straub's The Talisman is going to be a TNT mini-series. That sounded good in theory because this story is too epic for a feature...but then I read this:

"Ehren (The Ring, Skeleton Key) Kruger has been handed the scripting duties."

For fuck's sake and the love of all things holy and sacred...NO! NO! NO!

This is one of the best dark fantasy novels ever written and they're going to let a hack like Kruger adapt this thing? For the record, if you didn't hear about his abomination of a screenplay back when it was being developed by Dreamworks, you can read every painful detail here:

Words can't describe this disgust coarsing through my veins. One of my all-time favorite novels is about to be molested harder than a teenage boy at a Republican rally.

All TNT would've had to do was re-hire Brian Henson and everything would've been fine and dandy. But nooooooo...

Why?! Why?! Why?!

Enough Stephen King mini-series have been botched that I have no expectations whatsover anymore. I thought "It", Tobe Hooper's "Salem's Lot", and "Storm of the Century" were good. The rest ranged from average to pathetic. You could do worse than Kruger writing. I didn't think his two feature movies were bad. Maybe he got better since he wrote the earlier draft of "Talisman". For me, the news item that would be the death-toll for this project is ... directed by Mick Garris.

I'll say I have slightly higher hopes for a TV mini series than I had for the 2 hour movie. That they brought back Ehren Kruger (the "genius" behind BROTHERS GRIMM, SKELETON KEY and BLOOD AND CHOCOLATE) is baffling, though.

I am not hopeful. I am dismally, despondantly NOT looking forward to this, as a matter of fact.

I read about that this morning. I've been waiting for years to see if anything ever came to fruition with The Talisman. It's my favorite King work (yay Peter Straub too) besides The Eyes of the Dragon. I'll watch it but just like with everything else of his, I'm pretty damn skeptical of how the end product will be.

But what if Romero ends up directing it?

It will still suck...

I've read this book like five times. I would pee myself for a good film version.

I don't think I'll be peeing myself soon. Sad

The first question Stephen [King] gets asked is, “What do you think about Hollywood ruining your books?” and he says, “They’re not ruined. Here they are, right here on the shelf. Nobody ruined them. They’re not touched.”

That still doesn't make a craptastic film or TV version of the book more palatable.

No, but I think it's important to keep in perspective that after the dust settles from this TV Miniseries, The Talisman we all know and love will still be there. No one is ruining anything.

If it sucks that's at least one remake you can all look forward to happening eventually. Wink
