I'm a voracious reader, but I can't stand contemporary literature and I'm unimpressed with most mainstream horror writers. I've disliked the last several King novels I've read, I HATED Hannibal.

I like hardcore, cerebral horror. I loved House of Leaves, I dig Poppy Z, HPL is my favorite and I really enjoyed Haunted by Palahniuk.

Is there anyone else out there I should really look into?

Brian Keene is pretty good stuff. Peter Straub is too for the most part.

When I think of different kinds of horror, "hardcore" and "cerebral" are usually 2 different things -- so I'm not exactly sure what kinds of books you want to have recommended ("House of Leaves" and HPL are about as far as you can get from "hardcore"). I do know what you mean by the difficulty in finding new good horror. Everything on the bookshelves are the same authors everyone knows about, or really stupid-looking new stuff. There must be great horror being written all the time, but its hard to find. Here are some things that might not be obvious but I think are really good.

Caitlin R Kiernan -- very Southern Goth, Lovecraftian
Thomas Ligotti -- highly stylized (not for everyone though), again with Lovecraft influences
Tananarive Due -- the 3 books of hers I've read were all very good, with a unique voice and style utilizing African mythology
China Mieville -- found in SF/Fantasy but his books are terrific with strong horror elements
Tim Powers -- fantastically imaginative horror/fantasy/sf/adventure hybrids for the last 25 years, "Anubis Gates" and "On Stranger Tides" must reads for any horror fan
Theodore Roszak -- wish he wrote more, but what he's done is cerebral and unforgettable. "Flicker" is a must-read.
Phil Rickman -- classy stylish atmospheric British horror, I prefer his older supernatural stories over the recent "Merrily Watkins Mysteries" but they're all good
Katherine Dunn -- "Geek Love"; still kind of one-hit-wonder from 15 years ago, but what a one-hit it is (and rarely shelved or classified as horror, even though it clearly is)

I just read the 'Girl Next Door' by Ketchum and it was great.

World War Z was pretty good so far (I have not finished it)

Plus I just read 'Sacrifice' by John Everson -->http://horroryearbook.com/2006/11/14/interview-w-john-everson/

Tim Lebbon is a must read author. He has fantasy and horror out now.

Bret Easton Ellis's AMERICAN PSYCHO is hard core, as well.

A Choir of Ill Children by Tom Piccirilli is another great one for fans who like to think.
