I general sequels are frowned upon, looked down on and most of the time hated. Few have lived up to their original but still there's a handful that surpass what we've already seen.
So my question is what maks a sequel worth watching? |

I've always thought a good sequel should extend the story without repeating the original's. "Saw 2" was one that extended the story and didn't really repeat the original in terms of plot.
Aliens
Superman 2
Spider-Man 2
It varies. _________________ ----------

yeah, extend without repeating's good. or, be both imitative of the first without quite being derivative and still managing to escalate the story. all the while maintaining a solid sense of nostalgia and our confidence that this is about story, not box office receipts.
anyway, HALLOWEEN II did it for me, as did T2. and, BOOK OF SHADOWS, though I really dug it, was really just a horror story that happened to be set in BW/franchise territory. same for DEVIL'S REJECTS: we don't really need HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES for DREJ to be the beautiful thing it most definitely is. as for sequels that have been an improvement, I agree again: SAW 2, for sure. so much better than the first. or JEEPERS CREEPERS 2 as well. as for that sense of nostalgia, though, it was pretty much what SCREAM 2 & 3 traded solely in. FINAL DESTINATION, however, the key to it, I think, might just be the derivation: the first sequel gave us everything the original did (ie, it didn't tamper with the formula), but then twisted/escalated it at the same time, and so was complete.
[edit: and yeah, no doubt--SPIDEY2 was far superior to the first] _________________ couple of Demon Theory reviews: here | ToxicUniverse |

That's what made Godfather 2 so fantastic. _________________ ----------
