Figured this'd be a good thread for anyone looking for something new to read, to keep it organized when you're responding to someone's request quote there post to keep things from getting mixed up.

To get the ball rolling, I'm looking for some good serial killer books non-fiction mainly but would like some good fictional ones as well.

I'm not big on serial killer books overall. I do have one recommendation off the top of my head, though you probably know this one already -- the books of Michael Slade. Just finished the latest "Bed of Nails". They're consistently good, with my favorites being "Ghoul" and "Ripper". Be warned that while each book is stand-alone, there's continuity with characters through all the books, and each book may contain major spoilers for earlier books.

Many of Jack Ketchum's books have a "true-crime" feel to them. And a couple of true-life classics that I'm sure you know off that I love: Norman Mailer's "The Executioner's Song" and Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood".

I know that's probably not very helpful -- like I said, I'm not big on serial killer books and some good "sleepers" haven't come to me at the moment.

There's a true crime book called CANNIBAL : by Lois Jones. It's not so much a serial killer as it is a disturbing story. It's about the German guy who put ads out on the internet for people to come and be eaten by him.

And there are 2 books on the Zodiac killer by Robert Graysmith. The first one tells of the murders, and the 2nd one unmasks the killer for the first time. Gruesome stuff.

Fiend, Depraved, Deviant and Bestial by Harold Schechter are great books.

Everyone who's read Devil in the White City says it's phenomenal.

The Devil's Knot deals with the case of The West Memphis 3 and is one of the best books I've ever read.

The Confessions of Henry Lee Lucas is an excellent book.

If you can find it, Dracula Was a Woman: In Search of the Blood Countess of Transylvania is the only good book about Elizabeth Bathory ever published. It debunks an awful lot of rumors about her so people who want to live in the fantasy world that she bathed in victims blood or killed her husband they may want to avoid that one.

The A-Z Encyclopedia of Serial Killers is a good starting point and they just released an updated edition of this in June.
