I saw THE FOUNTAIN tonight at the AFI film fest in LA.
This thing is gonna bomb biiiiiiig time. And with good reason. Boring, pretentious, shallow, muddy, dribble... these are the words I would use to describe this hopelessly dull mess. I'm a sucker for deep-think science fiction. I love both versions of SOLARIS. I prefer Asimov's Foundation series to any other sci-fi universe. I think Speilberg's A.I. is a masterpiece. But THE FOUNTAIN just plain sucked.
Dimmly lit art direction, Highlander-style flashback cuts, endlessly boring soap opera dialogue, corny mind-trip imagery right out of a Carlos Castanda bookcover. And it just goes on like that, at a fucking snail's pace. NOTHING HAPPENS. I felt nothing. I experienced nothing. No awe. No deep thoughts. No emotion other than mild embarrasement and major boredom. I've got more patience than most when it comes to existentialism in film. Vincent Gallo's THE BROWN BUNNY is perfectly paced as far as I'm concerned. I like 'em slow. I like 'em long. As long as they're interesting. THE FOUNTAIN is not interesting. It's not an epic. It's a cramped little brain-fart captured on film. My favorite movies are interesting failures. Nothing captures my attention more than bold cinematic statements like DOGVILLE, or THE PASSENGER, or TWO LANE BLACKTOP or TIIMECODE or SOLARIS. This isn't even an interesting misfire, it's just a dumb movie. It's also the biggest let-down of the year, IMHO. |

Eh, i ll watch it regardless, I love Aroofsky's stuff.

| As we saw with Pi Aronofsky likes to play with Jewish/Kabalistic mysticism. With the whole "tree of life" reference, I think this may appeal to those who have a background in kaballistic studies. |

Yeah, all twelve of them. Too bad general audiences not versed in kaballistic symbolism will have to slog through the boredom on screen.
There's an endless wealth of things that make THE FOUNTAIN such a bore, but one that sticks in my mind is this: We're shown that Hugh Jackman's character is so committed to saving his angelic wife Rachel Weiz, he would do anything for her. Everyone in the film constantly talks about how amazing Rachel Weiz's character is. She's so sensitive. She's so brilliant. She's so passionate. Ellen Burstyn's character actually says the line "She's so amazing" after leaving Rachel Weiz's room. Her amazingness is basically the reason the entire story exists. She's so amazing and incredible.
The problem is... WE NEVER SEE ANYTHING AMAZING ABOUT HER. We don't even see anything milldly interesting about her. Those scenes aren't in the movie. We're just supposed to take them as a given. What a waste! Wouldn't we feel something more if we felt the same way everyone on screen does about her? She's on screen, plenty. She just doesn't have anything to say or do. Her husband, the director of the film, just fixes his lovestruck camera on her lovely face and lets the footage roll. He hasn't written ANYTHING for her to do or say. She's the LEAST amazing person on the screen, and we're supposed to believe that she's the most. It's like the meat of the character got left out. She's a blackhole. She's a placeholder for a REAL character.
The whole film is a snooze, but this really stood out as a problem. |
