God has seen fit to smite me again. I won't go into the boring details except to say that it involved the mechanic saying "Your estimate is $2200 to $2400," and then the cocksmoking fuckstains at my insurance company saying "We don't cover that." So I'm in the mood not only to get shitfaced and watch depressing movies about people whose lives are shittier than mine but to list them here.
You can use this list either as a warning or, if you're one of these tragic emo types, a reference. Please feel free to share the pain by adding to it.
Lilya 4-Ever. Reason #1932582309481235098 I'm glad I wasn't born in any part of the former Soviet Union. The English title of this really should've been Grim and Grimmer, because that's the progression of the movie. If anything bad can happen to this chick, it does.
Grave of the Fireflies. I've been trying to decide which is more depressing, Lilya or Fireflies. I can't. At least this one is anime so you can maintain some sort of distance from the emotional pain inflicted by the characters' suffering. A good one to show little kids if you want to scar them for life.
The Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till. This is a documentary about a black boy from Chicago who went to Mississippi on vacation in 1955 and came home dead for whistling at a white woman. A real pick-me-up. We've come a long way, baby. Now a black man can get away with murdering a white woman and the waiter who stopped by to drop off her glasses. Golly, can't we all just get along? |

GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES is sad..
I'd have to go with MAREBITO most recently, and maybe REQUIEM FOR A DREAM off hand. |

| Right now, the first one to come to mind is Takeshi Kitano's FIREWORKS (Hana-Bi). |

I always found TESTAMENT to be really depressing. _________________ "Sigh. Malachi, Conan is a fictional character, Dungeon Masters are real, hard-working people..." - Chainsaw

I just watched Fireworks the other night... LOVE Beat Takeshi!! The man can do no wrong in my eyes...
I watched Lilya-4-Ever about a month or so ago... what a feel good movie... NOT!! Poor girl...
I'm going to throw in The Sweet Hereafter... A little Irreversible.... just a pinch of Fat Girl... and a dash of Kichiku Dai Enkai... and maybe just a little Violent Cop to kick it up a notch... |

Good call!
Another Cage vehicle I find depressing, just in its sombering reality is - LORD OF WAR.
THE JACKET is another downright bleak, sad film recently. |

Yep....this is the one that I was gonna mention. Just watched it again recently---total downer.
'Dancer In The Dark' with Bjork is pretty glum viewing.

I definitely go along with Requiem votes. That movies stuck with me for days. Midnight Cowboy is a real downer too. _________________ Can you feel the thirst?

I'll probably go to hell for this, but Requiem for a Dream struck me as funny. I couldn't help but laugh in the final montage where they were all just totally screwed up. It was just so over the top.
I think the fact they were all solid losers made me lose any compassion for the characters. All of their woes were of their own creation.
Grave of the Firefly was solidly more depressing as it was bad things happening to those undeserving of such.
I'm surprised Irreversible hasn't been named yet. That's the last one that really made me a little grey for a couple days. _________________ Reviews:
