A trailer for Martín Desalvo's Darkness by Day (El día trajo la oscuridad) has been added to YouTube.

The screenplay for Darkness by Day was written by Josefina Trotta. The movie stars Mora Recalde, Romina Paula, Luciano Suardi, Pablo Caramelo, and Marta Lubos.

Here's a log line for Darkness by Day from the international sales agent for the movie, M-Appeal World Sales UG (haftungsbeschränkt): "Two women, entangled in madness and attraction - and a craving for blood."

Here's a synopsis for Darkness by Day from M-Appeal: "An outbreak of rabies has appeared in a small village. Virginia receives an unexpected visit by her cousin Anabel, who is suffering from a strange illness, sleeping during the day and staying awake all night. Day and night intermingle, telephones don't work and with the bitter cold, a feeling of anxiety starts to grow on everyone. However, Virginia is feeling more and more attracted to Anabel..."

Here's a description of Darkness by Day from the Buenos Aires International Festival of Independent Cinema (Buenos Aires Festival Internacional de Cine Independiente - "BAFICI" for short): "It starts like this: a beach, a cliff, a pine tree forest, and a house made of stone. In the house, Virginia wakes up startled by a nightmare, and in the nightmare we can see her cousin Anabel with a deathly pale face and traces of blood around her lips. There's always an instant moment of normality immediately prior to insanity, but in his film Martín Desalvo refuses us the access to it: there's not a single shot that doesn't transmit the feeling of imminent horror, whether it's in the recurrent and premonitory dreams Virginia suffers, or the development of a main plot that revolves around a rabies outbreak that seems to have spread in the area. And that horror slowly gains shape and moves into Virginia's house and its surroundings, where decaying animal corpses start to appear. Stylish and disturbing, Darkness by Day puts into images the dream of any exquisite genre cinema lover, through a story that draws directly from HP Lovecraft and Algernon Blackwood and yet uses the same devotion to echo The Beyond's Lucio Fulci and Mirror's Andrej Tarkovsky."

Darkness by Day is scheduled to have its European première at this year's International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) on January 26th, and to subsequently be screened there on January 27th, January 29th, and February 1st.

Here's a description of Darkness by Day from IFFR: "Martín Desalvo (Kept and Dreamless, Tiger Awards Competition 2005) is finally back in Rotterdam with his latest - breathtaking and unsettling - work. ¶ Virginia and her niece Anabel are staying in an old family home surrounded by beaches, woods and rocks. But the initial sunshine doesn't last: right from the opening scene, we know something strange is going on. There is an outbreak of rabies in the area, but the ominous atmosphere points to even greater dangers. Anabel only sleeps during the day, wandering through the dark trees at night. As Virginia's (prescient?) dreams grow increasingly horrific, their dads - tough guys in lumberjack shirts used to being able to tackle any threat - stand by helplessly as darkness looms ever closer. ¶ This dreamlike, stylised Argentinean horror film combines recognisable elements with alienating twists. Desalvo cleverly plays with the genre, and with viewers' expectations."
