[As the following is the first detailed information on Deadball, I'm hereby creating a dedicated thread for that movie, rather than continuing to post about it on the thread for Yakuza Weapon.]

YŻdai Yamaguchi's "splatter comedy" Deadball - a.k.a. "Dead Ball" - is the seventh movie produced by Nikkatsu Corporation (Nikkatsu K.K.) under the company's Sushi Typhoon label. The screenplay for it apparently was (co-)written by Keita Tokaji. Its cast apparently includes Tak Sakaguchi (Sakaguchi Taku), Kai AtŰ, Bobby (second listing), Jun'ichi GamŰ, Akio Iwahara (PDF file), Takatsugu Iwama (first listing), Kazuto Nakamura, Suwaru RyŻ, Takashi Sugiuchi, RyŰ Takano, Hajime Taniguchi, Jun Tsuchiuchi, Mari Hoshino, and the four-member female group DizzyBusy - comprised of TOMOchan, eRina, Lina, and YU-KO. Yoshihiro Nishimura and his Nishimura Eizo Co. Ltd. (Y.K. Nishimura EizŰ) presumably were responsible for its special make-up effects. Similarly, Tsuyoshi Kazuno and his Studio Buckhorn Y.K. (Y.K. Sutajio BakkuhŰn) presumably were responsible for its visual effects.

As I noted back on July 17th of last year, according to Sushi Typhoon, Deadball "has dead things. And sports" - specifically, baseball.

Interestingly, Nikkatsu/Sushi Typhoon producer Yoshinori Chiba was an executive producer of Yamaguchi's Battlefield Baseball (Jigoku KŰshien); his and Kumi Kobata's Media Suits Inc. (K.K. Media SŻtsu) was one of the companies that produced it. Media Suits was merged with and into Nikkatsu on February 1, 2007.

Deadball - or, at least, the Japanese theatrical version of it - has a running time of 99 minutes. Eirin (Eiga Rinri Iinkai / Film Classification and Rating Committee) has given it an R15+ rating.

Apparently, Sakaguchi plays a high school student named "JŻbei" in Deadball, just as he played a high school student named "JŻbei" in Battlefield Baseball. Also, like JŻbei in Battlefield Baseball, JŻbei in Deadball is a literally deadly baseball player...

A teaser trailer for Deadball has been added to YouTube.

Here's a description of Deadball from Nikkatsu: "When he was a child, baseball prodigy Jubei Yakyu (Tak Sakaguchi) accidentally caused the death of his father with a super-powered, deadly fireball pitch. Having sworn off the game for life because of the incident, Jubei is now 17 and the most cold-blooded juvenile delinquent in Japan. Sent to a reformatory for a killing spree, Jubei learns that his estranged brother had died there earlier from a mysterious illness. In order to fulfill his brother's last wishes, Jubei reluctantly joins the prison baseball team when they take on the Black Dahlias, a sexy squad of killer high school girls who are determined to slaughter every last man on Jubei's team! But the prison officials have plans of their own for Jubei, including an alliance with a squadron of uniformed Nazi officers! Suddenly, Jubei finds himself not only fighting to win the game, but also to save his own life!"

According to said poster, the screenplay for Deadball was written by Keita Tokaji and YŻdai Yamaguchi (Yamaguchi is credited with the "adaptation"). Distribution rights for Deadball are to be offered for sale by Nikkatsu at this year's Marchť du Film in Cannes; the movie is scheduled to be screened at the Gray 2 on May 14th at 9:30 a.m. (09:30) and May 16th at 1:30 p.m. (13:30).

Here's a new description of Deadball from Nikkatsu: "Baseball prodigy Jubeh Yakyu (Tak Sakaguchi) is the most feared and dangerous juvenile delinquent in all of Japan. After accidentally causing the death of his father with a super-powered, deadly fireball pitch, Jubeh swore off baseball and became a criminal and now, at 17, has been sent to the Pterodactyl Juvenile Reformatory for hardened criminals. Headmistress Ishihara, the granddaughter of a World War II Nazi collaborator, runs the institution with an iron fist and the enthusiastic help of her sadistic assistant, Ilsa. After arriving at the hellhole, Jubeh soon learns from governor Mifune that his long-lost, younger brother Musashi had also done time there after a murder spree, but had since died mysteriously. ∂ Despite having sworn never to play baseball again, Jubeh is presented with an ultimatum by governor Mifune: join the reformatory team, The Gauntlets, in the national tournament for juvenile inmates, or witness the death of his innocent cellmate Four Eyes (Mari Hoshino). With the knowledge that the death of his brother is somehow connected to the team, Jubeh agrees, and Gauntlet training begins. Their first opponents: the sexy but deadly 'psycho butcher girls' of the St. Black Dahlia High School, a team of literal man-killers. And so the splatterific baseball tournament begins, but Jubeh soon learns that he is not only fighting to win the game, but also to save his own life! ∂ A hilariously offensive, politically incorrect sports splatter comedy, DEADBALL is director Yudai Yamaguchi's follow-up to his earlier zombie baseball classic BATTLEFIELD BASEBALL, and once again features action star Tak Sakaguchi (VERSUS, BE A MAN! SAMURAI SCHOOL). A riotous, over-the-top epic of excess, DEADBALL is the movie for the psycho sports fan in all of us, and more fun than a prison cavity search!"

The Asahi Shimbun - English Web Edition:
"U.S. filmgoers to get taste of Sushi Typhoon B movies" (August 13, 2011)
http://www.asahi.com/english/TKY201108120273.html
Quote:
In a bid to take the U.S. low-budget film market by storm, if not the Academy Awards, studio Nikkatsu Corp. has launched a new label devoted to B class action movies, the studio's producer said.

Marking its 100th anniversary next year, the studio also intends to make use of the low-budget movies, through the Sushi Typhoon label, as leverage to encourage young filmmakers to fully unleash their creative potential, the producer said.

The growing consensus has been that anime and horror titles are the only Japanese movies that can sell overseas. However, B-class action movies are also widely popular in the United States and other countries and regions.

. . .

Nikkatsu producer Yoshinori Chiba had been in charge of worldwide sales of V-Cinema straight-to-video movies.

In 2007, he produced "The Machine Girl" funded by an investment from a U.S. company. The movie became a hit, and the DVD of the title sold 100,000 copies outside Japan.

"But the Japanese side saw no benefits because the movie was considered a U.S. title," Chiba said. "So we decided to set up a film label for overseas markets."

BTW, in Deadball, the four members of DizzyBusy - as previously noted, TOMOchan, eRina, Lina, and YU-KO - play members of the aforementioned "St. Black Dahlia High School" baseball team. Other members of that team apparently are played by EMIJAY, erico, MIT$UKI, and nanami.

The Hollywood Reporter:
Deadball review
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/review/deadball-film-review-227785
Quote:
Another cheap, cheerful production from Nikkatsu's Sushi Typhoon series, with much the same schlocky parodies of Yamato spirit, Deadball will probably hit a home run in overseas Asia-extreme genre circle at which the series is specifically targeted.

. . .

Deadball is a slightly less brain-damaged sister of Yakuza Weapon (another title in the Sushi Typhoon series co-directed by Yamaguchi and Sakaguchi), dishing out essentially the same kind of cartoon-like choreographed fights and blowouts, outlandish gore effects and kinky girls. The exaggerated violence and far-fetched scenarios gel better here, because the sight of baseballs with the explosive power of missiles is a tad more novel than mecha-body-weapons, robots, now used to death in the series. Thankfully, the latter are kept to a minimum until the end where it works as a twist.
