You have to wonder, after looking in the ledger, seeing the name there, does he already know? Is he aware of what's going to happen? Or at least, some part of him?

I think consciously he knows she's lying/running form something, but I don't think he knows his alter sees her as a rival and wants to kill her.

Hitchcock did some wonderfully subtle things with Marion's character.... her underwear going form white to black after the theft, her literally and symbolically cleansing herself after deciding to return the money and face the consequences. It really makes her death has more of an impact as she's essentially reclaiming her innocents just as she's murdered.

But it almost seems like he knows. Like he wants her, wants the satisfaction of having her in his own way or his mother's way, so he facilitates or at least allows mother to do what she's going to do, while still keeping himself separate from the events.
