I know that the studio wanted the film to be under a specific time but I really feel the movie plays stronger with the scenes of the colony and Newts parents discovering the nest.
I'm watching it with them in, right now, but I prefer it without the extra scenes. I mean, they are nice once you've already seen the movie, but for a first viewing, as much as possible about that colony should be a surprise. I like that you learn about Newt at the exact same time as the marines do. Helps you see things from their perspective.

Clearly we enjoy different types of pornography. I love the surprise walk-in. "Omg! what are you doing with my girlfriend, you bastard? No, that's all wrong. Watch how I do it."

I love in the trivia on IMDB that they list Camerons trademarks one being the use of strong female leads, the first movie they list in reference to this is Piranha 2

The dropship is one cool looking craft. It's no TIE Interceptor, but still damn cool.

"We're in the pipe, 5 by 5." I always assumed that's where Whedon got that 5x5 thing that Faith always said.

"You know, we manufacture those, by the way."

That is such a great bit of dialog tacked on. It feels real. I wonder if that was in the script or ad libbed.
