I never did much get into older "classic" films so I don't have much of an opinion on guys like Bogart and such. Still this isn't an easy pick thinking about the guys and girls that I have seen either damn near or all of their work. 4 guys really stick out to me though when I think about this. I think I can feel good about narrowing it down to Clint Eastwood, Jack Nicholson and George C. Scott and maybe Robert Duvall, I do love to watch him.

I think these 3 or 4 guys can really carry an entire movie as epic as can be.

At the end of the day though there's one guy that can make me smile no matter what and also cringe in fear.

I'd have to give it to Jack Nicholson. I love you man!

I will say there's a couple of guys and a girl I'm watching now that very well may challenge that. Russell Crowe, Johnny Depp, Daniel Day-Lewis and Nicole Kidman.

Now teach me about some older great actors....

To me it's Johnny Depp. He's just so diverse and picks the kinds of films to do that most people usually won't.

Way too many greats to name one but I have a few that I think are great.

Gary Oldman
Don Cheadle
Eric Bana
Liam Neeson
Humphrey Bogart
Henry Fonda
Jimmy Stewart
Jack Nicholson
Samuel L. Jackson (say what you want, his performance in Jackie Brown is phenomenal, same with his performance in Jungle Fever and The Incredibles)

Definitely can't argue with Depp.

How could I forget to mention Jimmy Stewart. He is definitely one of the greats and could easily be considered the greatest.

EDIT

Liam Neeson is pretty great. I've watched a couple of documentaries with him narrating and he does a fantastic job. When I make my Stanley Kubrick documentary I'll have to get him. Very Happy

Humphry Bogart
Carry Grant(!)
Ernest Borgnine
Mother Fuckin' Warren Oates
Robert Shaw
Paul Newman
Anthony Hopkins
Jeff Bridges

And Steve McQueen.

There are a lot more that I think are great, but I didn't put em in because people already used them in their lists.

These guys are great. I was pretty bummed when Paul Newman died and watched every movie of his I could get my hands on.

My Mom and Stepdad opened a hot dog joint and called it Bogies and had pictures of Bogart all over the place. I designed the menu and all the signs myself and I must say they looked pretty awesome. My stepdad passed away not long after they opened so my Mom just sold the place. It was pretty damn sweet while it lasted though.

Also shout out to Joseph Gordon Levitt. One of the best contemporary actors working right now.

Part of the many great actors not named yet:
Gerard Depardieu
Catherine Deneuve
Francois Berleand
...

Just a few french actors. I consider them part of those that are so good, any director would be stupid to not try to hire them, esp. as they could probably direct themselves.

I'm surprised noone's mentioned DeNiro yet. Sure, his career ain't what it used to be, but it doesn't need to be. He's Travis fuckin' Bickle.

Also: Bill Murray.

I can't pick a favorite. I suck at that. But, at the moment, he's the only person not already listed whose career I feel that strongly about. I'll see anything he's in.
