I have really low expectations for this album but have been very curious as to how it was gonna turn out.

It's a Jerry Cantrell solo album basically, and becomes super repetative after 3 or so songs.

The new singer gets very little time to do his thing. Which is too bad since he is quite good and has a lot of charisma.

I love old Alice In Chains. Whenever a band loses their singer to whatever and gets a new one and reforms I'm skeptical. Plus it's been 14 years. That's a long fucking time. I want it to be a great album. Months can go by at times without anything that I'm interested in coming out.

This reminds me of the show Rock Star. I loved it. I hate American Idol but in Rock Star they sang some great songs like Pink Floyd and the Stones. I didn't care about INXS or whatever the name of the second horrible band was but I tuned in every show and both times picked the winner after the third show. I wish they'd bring it back and give me something enjoyable to watch on TV.

Holy fuck! This is really good. I couldn't imagine Alice in Chains without Layne Staley but damn Duvall has a great voice. The first track 'All Secrets Known' is so classic Alice I forgot how long its been and that this is a different band.

'Your Decision' is an awesome song.

Butcher is just hard to impress. I don't hear repetativeness at all in these songs.

'When the Sun Rose Again' is a kickass track as well and the title track 'Black Gives Way to Blue' is love. Short and sweet with subtle piano from Elton John.

Black Gives Way To Blue

I don't want to feel no more
It's easier to keep falling
Imitations are pale
Emptiness...all tomorrows

Haunted by your ghost...

Lay down, black gives way to blue
Lay down, I'll remember you

Fading out by design
Consciously avoiding changes
Curtain's drawn now it's done
Silencing all tomorrows

Forcing a goodbye...

Lay down, black gives way to blue
Lay down, I'll remember you

I love this song. Sublime. Is it for Layne?

Hell yeah! I might have to see them myself. I am really surprised at how fucking good this album is and how great Duvall is. Where has this guy been?

I'm feeling rather melancholy after listening to the title track over and over but I can't stop it's just a really beautiful song to me. I think of Layne and Alice 15 years ago which was such an amazing time for music with amazing band after band coming out of Seattle. My life couldn't be more different today. Not necessarily in a good way either.

To check my opinion, I figured out a buncha the stuff on guitar.

My statement stands...it's repetative.

Does that make it bad? HELL NO. Does the fact it's really a Cantrell solo album make it bad? Hell no cuz it has Sean on drums and he fucking rips.

But there are differences from this album as compared to the "real" Alice In Chains.
As long as it pleases their fans thats all that counts though.

I wish Chris Cornell hadn't wanked out and had his ego blow up, I am ready for some output from my beloved Soundgarden.

I live in Seattle and know a lot of these guys (I've been kicking around up here even when I lived in Cali since the mid 80s) and it's a sad fact that Cornell has turned into a class A buttwad. Really too bad. At least the Melvins are back in form since they incorporated the guys from Big Business into the fold.

Also, keep a look out for Shrinebuilder. It's Wino on guitar, Dale Crover on drums, Al Cisneros on bass, and my old pal SCott from Neurosis on guitar/vox. This stuff cruuuuushes.
