Not sure how this opening plays to younger people. I think this stopped in the mid 90's or something. Channels would go off the air at some point for a few hours every night and they ended with the Star Spangled Banner and then there was no transmission. But then that got replaced with infomercials. And today there is 24 hour programming.

there are still some channels here that sign off for the night.... but at around 3 or 4 am

I know I say this a lot but I do love the music to this film. Although I will say this is probably among my favorites. I think it ranks as one of Jerry Goldsmith's best.
