Though it may just be a rumor or an idea they are just kicking around ... Sony may make the PS3 $400 but then charge $100 per game.

Personally, I have stopped buying as many games as I used to thanks to the next gen $59.99 price tag and EB's shitty trade-in values. I am a hardcore gamer but I am not hardcore enough to pay $100 for a game. Even if this price only applied to exclusive titles how many of us would be willing to take that kind of hit in our pockets?

There are some that can argue that $400 is cheap for a Blu-ray player but that DVD format may or maynot be around in a few years. DVD suceeded because it was a vast improvement over VHS ... Why the hell would I pay $30 to watch 50 First Dates with a slightly clearer picture? Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to the common man out there.

What I liked so much about the 360 was that it didn't force HD-DVD on you like the PS3 is. If you want it you can pick it up later, if not then no worries.

I was going through the vast stupidity that is internet gaming forums just to see what the feelings were towards the imaginary "console war." I am still amazed that after all these years and system launches people still bitch and play "mine is bigger than yours" about everything. On a Sony forum everything Microsoft did before the 360 hit the street was insulted but now that Sony is pulling many of the exact same moves (2 models, wireless controllers, a marketplace) it's all considered a great strategy. So it's dumb for the 360 to sell an unproven format player seperately from the main console to keep the price low but it's the best thing since sliced bread if Sony forces it on you for $499 and $599? I don't get it. Logic is always a lost cause when you enter the gaming discussion arena.

I agree with you on that, Kry. But logic generally ends up being a casualty online in everything.

Honestly, if this goes through, and the rumor does become reality, it'll feel like the biggest FU to the gaming fanbase ever. "OK, you guys wanted to bitch about the price being too high? Fine. We'll cut $100 off the tag. But now, we're going to make up for it by getting that money back and more with 2 games."

I don't know what the Japanese word for "chutzpah" is, but I'm sure the guys at Sony do.

I seriously doubt we'll see $100 games in the US. The IGN poll (98% for "No Way!") I think pretty much reflects how the US market will react. Maybe in Japan where they're used to getting ass-raped for the costs of media, but it won't fly here.

this is pretty much what's happening in Japan, but here the PS3 is going to be $499 and $599 with games at $59.99.

Well, the prevalent mentality is that $600 is still cheaper than upgrading a top-of-the-line computer. Where Sony keeps stumbling is on the idea that the PS3 ISN'T a gaming console, it's a computer. So. for what you get, the price is rather reasonable.

They're wrong, but that's what they believe.

I am a little stumped as to why Sony believes that their new system will replace the personal computer. Maybe they are just talking out of their asses to garner more press.

When the damn thing runs AutoCAD, AIM, Yahoo Messenger, WMV, iTunes, Quicktime, Gangsta Crizzab, my printers and photoshop programs THEN I'll consider it a replacement.

They are really betting on the "it's cheap for a Blu-ray player" angle. Yeah, compared to the $1,000 alternative but then one also has to look at the price of Blu-ray discs compared to ordinary ones. The PS3 is looking more like a luxury item than a game system at this point.

I don't buy as many games anymore either, if theres alternate endings etc I will make damn sure I've played the fu*k out of it before the game shop gets there grubby paws back on it

It's starting to remind me of their PSX, and look how that turned out.

Y'wanna know how to sell the PS3? Make it be able to download porn instantaneously.

Ah yes, the PSX. No one wanted one and no stores carried it. Didn't the same thing happen to some premium version of the Gamecube?
