Big Bow for Saw

Not that anyone’s going to be too surprised by it, but we might as well make it official; Saw III (review) kicked ass at the box office this weekend.

The sequel pulled in $34.3 million since its opening on Friday, which is not only the largest take for the franchise, but the biggest opening Lionsgate’s ever seen. Someone must be very happy this morning.

Though director Darren Lynn Bousman and the series creators, Leigh Whannell and James Wan, have said they’re done with the series, and indeed the third film ties up the trilogy nicely, don’t think for a second that Lionsgate’s going to let this cash cow out to pasture. Writers are already working on Saw IV from early reports, so expect even more hype come next Halloween.
