Hooper to Helm Buick 8

Tobe Hooper behind the wheel of From a Buick 8Though the fact that Tobe Hooper is now in the director’s seat for the adaptation of Stephen King’s From a Buick 8, a spot once held by George Romero, isn’t really news, it did finally show up in the trades today so I guess that makes it all “official”.

Daily Variety is reporting that Hooper will direct from a script by Jonathan Schaech and Richard Chizmar (scripters of “The Washingtonians”, among others). Amicus Entertainment prez Robert Katz has taken it under his wing, adding it to Stuart Gordon’s upcoming Stuck.

In case you’re not familiar with the Stephen King novel From a Buick 8 (get it here), it tells of a car that has been housed by some state troopers in Pennsylvania who found it mysteriously abandoned a few decades prior. The story of the car and what has come out of it is told to a rookie whose father, also a state trooper, recently passed away. The car leads to some alternate dimension (which is somewhat familiar to those who have read The Dark Tower series), and some nasty shit has come out of it over the years.

Though Hooper’s notorious for being attached to projects and mysteriously vanishing from them as well, we’ll hold out some hope this works out. Amicus is also behind the long-gestating remake of It’s Alive, which will be helmed by original director Larry Cohen.
