The Boris Karloff Collection
This collection of some rarely seen movies features one of the greatest horror actors of all time; sadly, none of them are what one would consider classics. Featured are Tower of London, The Black Castle, The Climax, The Strange Door, and Night Key. Tower is probably the most well known of the gathering, in which Boris stars with Basil Rathbone and Vincent Price. Chucky: The Killer DVD Collection
Another incomplete collection of Child’s Play movies; maybe someday they’ll manage to get all the films in one box. This box set features Child’s Play 2, Child’s Play 3, Bride of Chucky, and Seed of Chucky. While the second one was okay, the third is just dull and badly done. Then, of course, Ronnie Yu came along with Bride and made us forget all the bad that came before. Thanks for that, Ronnie! Seed was pretty good, too, but not nearly as funny as we had all hoped. Edgar Allan Poe’s Tales of Mystery & Imagination
Here we have eleven of the most popular Poe horror stories hosted by the one and only Christopher Lee. Included in this set are interpretations of The Fall of the House of Usher, The Cask of Amontillado, The Tell-Tale Heart, The Pit and the Pendulum and a lot more. Ah, the large-breasted queen of screams finally gets her collection of movies she hosted out on DVD. Rights issues previously prevented its release, but I’m guessing we’ll see no end to the flow now. Included in this box set are 1972’s Count Dracula’s Great Love, which features Paul Naschy as the Count and what he has to deal with when a traveling woman falls in love with him. Also included is 1974’s Frankenstein Castle of Freaks, in which the mad scientist brings a Neanderthal back to life. Buy it here!
Elvira’s Movie Macabre: Legacy of Blood/The Devil’s Wedding Night (1978/1973)

Two more features hosted by the one and only Cassandra Peterson, aka Elvira: Mistress of the Dark. Legacy tells of a family gathered together to hear the reading of their father’s will, whose only prerequisite is that they survive a weekend in his mansion. Things go badly. Wedding Night is about two brothers searching for a legendary ring who come upon Count Dracula’s castle in Transylvania and have all sorts of troubles. Buy it here!
Elvira’s Movie Macabre: The Doomsday Machine/Werewolf of Washington (1972/1973)

Elvira hosts a double feature of movies you would normally likely avoid like the plague but will likely watch due to her hypnotic cleavage. In The Doomsday Machine the titular device is found to be among the arsenal of the Red Chinese, who use it to blow up the Earth. Shortly before this happens, however, a manned mission to Venus’ crew is replaced by mostly women, so the species can propagate. In Werewolf a reporter who has an affair with the President’s daughter is sent to Hungary, where he’s bitten by a werewolf. When he’s transferred back to D.C. to be the President’s press assistant, the bodies begin to pile up in our capital. Buy it here!

Hard Candy (2006)

The Fatal Attraction for a new generation? So says one of the quotes on the box of this DVD, and from what I’ve heard, that’s pretty accurate. The story involves a girl who meets up with an older man, a man who believes her to be underage and willing to have sex with him, only for the table to be turned and him to become the victim. It’s supposed to be incredibly intense and gripping, but I have yet to see it so I can’t say for sure. Check out Debi’s DVD review for a better look at the disc! Buy it here!
Hellmaster (1992)

A college professor, long thought dead, has returned to the university he once taught at and begins to experiment on his students with a drug that turns them into murderous ghouls. The only ones who can stop him are a girl with psychic powers and a haggard reporter, and if they can’t, he has every intention of releasing a literal hell on Earth. Inner Sanctum Mysteries: The Complete Movie Collection
Based on a popular radio series of the same name, the Inner Sanctum Mysteries was another bold attempt at terrifying audiences back when Universal had a minor clue as to what they were doing. This collection features all the movies in the series: Calling Dr. Death, Dead Man’s Eyes, Weird Woman, The Frozen Ghost, Pillow of Death, and Strange Confession. Buy it here!
Jigoku (1960)

This is one of those films that’s always mentioned when the classics of Asian cinema come up, and thank God Criterion got its hands on it instead of, say, Miramax. The story is of a young theology student who flees a hit-and-run accident and the effects his guilt-ridden conscious has on him. The final third of the movie takes place in a startling version of hell, and the movie is seen as a terrifying classic in almost all circles. Buy it here!

A girl is drugged, raped, and killed on her 21st birthday by some very bad men. She’s not able to move on to the next life, however, as she is trapped in a netherworld and must battle all sorts of evil soul eaters while looking for a way to finally get to the other side. Night Feeders (2006)

With a title and a cover like this, how could you go wrong? Despite it being made with CG monsters and shot digitally, Night Feeders does a good job of invoking the 70’s monster movie feel that so many are trying (and failing) to do these days, though it does fall apart towards the end. He can’t seem to get to sleep at night, and for some strange reason he believes his girlfriend is being attacked by something while she’s asleep. Spirited Killer (2005)

A group of travelers are set upon by a multi-weapon wielding madman, killing some while others escape. This is the titular killer, a forest dweller who destroys anything that dares step into the jungle. Tony Jaa (Ong Bak) leads the group who go into the forest to stop the madman before he can kill again. Much punching and kicking ensues. Stay Alive: Unrated Director’s Cut (2006)

Man, I had so many hopes this movie would rise above its sucky premise and actually be something cool. Not only did it not rise above, it somehow managed to sink lower than the idea behind it: a video game that invades the real world and kills those playing it. It sinks because the characters are all moronically named; it ignores the history of the big bad who pursues the characters, Elizabeth Bathory, for some unknown reason; and it does nothing at all for our genre. A full box of five Tomiefilms detailing the strange adventures of the girl who just wouldn’t die no matter how hard everyone has tried. In this set you will find Tomie, Tomie: Another Face, Tomie: Replay, Tomie: Rebirth and Tomie: Forbidden Fruit. Why they weren’t able to get all the films together for one set I don’t know, but it’s better than nothing, right? Buy it here!

Visions of Suffering (2006)

Though I’ve not see either this or Nails, the last film of Iskanov’s Unearthed release, I’ve heard great things about both, and the imagery of the cover art alone is enough to peak my interest. The tale is of demons who find a way to cross into our world every time it rains and drag victims back to their hellish realm. Unearthed has packed all sorts of goodies onto this DVD, making it well worth the purchase price. Try something different!Buy it here!
