Oh, I did enjoy City Infernal quite a lot. I haven't been able to read Infernal Angel yet. My mother bought the second book and has hoarded it away from me ever since.

Good to see I'm not the only one who calls it literature. I knew there was something wrong with that creative writing class.
If your professor tries to convince you there's a two-tiered system of "literary" and "genre" writing, run screaming in the opposite direction. He is no good for your mind.

Well, I finished it last night. I like Lee's writing, but the ending seemed rushed, like he was trying to wrap up all the loose threads in a few pages. If people had started taking off masks and revealing their true identities, a la "Scooby Doo," I wouldn't have been surprised.
Not a total waste of time, but not what I was hoping for, either. Chalk it up to too much hype. I'll still read his stuff, though.

Start the first chapter of City Infernal. It's a much better read. The one you finished is low on the list of good reads by Lee. You should really give his good stuff a try.
City Infernal is one of his best.

I ordered a nice version of THE BIGHEAD a few years ago. I absolutely hated it. And yeah I love Cat III style hardcore horror, nunsploitation, all that good stuff.
The writing sucked is why I couldn't get into it. It was just all so "on purpose" as far as the shock value and everything, what with the raping old ladies and the unconvincing characters and their speach patterns...I could go on and on. It was just so PREDICTABLE.
I had built it up pretty far too by the time I got a copy, so that didn't help.
ANd a part of me (a BIG part of me) actually may eat these words because I am going to revisit THE BIGHEAD this year and re-read it to see if it sits better with me now.
That said, JACK KETCHUM is the man to read next. Pick up the mass market paperback of OFF SEASON. It's a one-sitting read for many.

Edward Lee says his upcoming House Infernal will be his biggest MMPB yet. Almost like two books in one.
I love the Infernal books, and can't wait for this one.
I am so sorry you read Monstrosity as your first Edward Lee. That's not a great book by his standards. Find an old novel of his somewhere online. He is totally more hard core than the Leisure stuff he's doing now. It's still good, but doesn't measure up to his earlier work.
And THE BIGHEAD isn't WAR AND PEACE. It's a story about a fucked up mongoloid raping old ladies and fucking tree stumps. You can't really candy coat that shit. Give it another try. Or better yet, try FAMILY TRADITION with John Pelan and Ed Lee. It's fucking disgusting....in a good way.

Haha! Obviously you never read THE HOUSE (the sequel to THE PIG) or GAST. It's just that he's switching back and forth between more mainstream mass market books, fucked up novellas for the small press and children's books. Yes, children's books. Do a search for MONSTER LAKE if you don't believe me.
I consider his INFERNAL books "young adult fiction". They'd make a good TV series along the lines of BUFFY. Never understood why so many people enjoy them. I gave up on them a bit into the second novel when Lee had the gall to copy-and-paste about 20 pages from the first book. I don't think I ever felt more insulted by a writer.

I didn't like BIGHEAD all that much either and I consider myself a fan of Lee's rough stuff. While I enjoyed the over the top gross out sex and violence of BIGHEAD, it suffered from the Marquis de Sade Syndrome, i.e. it got really repetitive and boring after a while. You can only read about a monster with a huge cock fucking a girl to death so many times before you get bored instead of wood. |

The House isn't a novel, it's a special novella he did in a re-release of THE PIG.
I'm not saying he can't write the way he used to, but he has evolved into a more mainstream writer. Not that I mind it that much, but I do prefer his earlier stuff.
