DmC: Devil May Cry (Video Game)Developer: Ninja Theory

Publisher: Capcom

Platforms: PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 (reviewed)

Capcom’s DmC: Devil May Cry releases on January 15, 2013, for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. DmC: Devil May Cry is a retelling of our protagonist Dante, with a deep emphasis on his origin story, while managing to be an incredibly new game instead of your average reboot.

The devil is in the details, and DmC: Devil May Cry is not your average hack-and-slasher. The title not only has a gripping storyline with an exhilarating narrative, but some of the most exquisite, well-drawn characters ever to appear in a game, which are showcased against a fluid, seamless combat structure. Gameplay never gets stale, as you manage to switch between sword and gunplay, almost flawlessly throughout the campaign.

The point system is back, and points can be used to upgrade your weapons as you acquire new skills and abilities. Gamers will feel right at home as they start out with the classic DMC controls that they know and love. Dante begins the story with his sword, Rebellion, and adds his twin shooters, Ebony & Ivory, as the game progresses. Players will also be able to pick up the massive axe Arbiter and the scythe Osiris as part of the arsenal collection. Controls make it easy to switch between weapons by pressing the left and right trigger buttons while pressing X to shoot handguns. The D-pad will be used to switch between your collection as you acquire more weapons and will be used more frequently as you fight your way through Limbo.

Dante is almost a rebellious child who is on a major freak-out after finding out he is an angel/demon hybrid. The first few moments of the game give us a glimpse of what is ahead with Dante waking up with a major hangover after picking up a couple of angel strippers at the bar. He soon wakes from his slumber to battle a couple of demons while completely naked with flying pizza, games and booze going everywhere. Yeah, these few brief moments set the course for the entire game.

The land of DmC is where demons are allowed to walk among us with overlords that have brought great crisis to the world. The have managed to control the weak through media, debt and poisoning our favorite beverages–the soda pop! Noooooo! Humanity’s only hope, besides Dante, is an underground group of Hackers called The Order. Dante sets out to uncover the truth by taking down the demon Mundus with the help of a witch called Cat.

The fighting mechanics are deep and hardcore while managing to accommodate the player perfectly as the game progresses. The best part of combat is having kick-ass sound effects and music to add just a touch of class to an already perfect demon beat down. And you are encouraged in DmC: Devil May Cry to put down the perfect beating by combining the attacks of all of your weapons. Not only will you be able to finish off demons faster, but it will aid in raising the amount of damage that your weapons deal to foes.

DmC: Devil May Cry has many side quests to keep things interesting such as finding Lost Souls, hidden rooms, unlockable weapons, and challenge rooms. Even smashing inanimate objects will give players currency that they can use in the Shop to buy health items and upgrades.

DmC: Devil May Cry is a nice combination of a hack-and-slasher and platformer with intense, fun puzzles throughout. The game has it all with its beautiful visuals, rock-hard melodies, fluid mechanics and one of the best storylines to date in the series. DmC manages to accomplish everything it set out to do and more.

DmC: Devil May Cry can now be preordered for $59.99 and is rated M by the ESRB for Blood and Gore, Drug Reference, Intense Violence, Nudity, Sexual Content & Strong Language. To learn more, visit the official Devil May Cry website.
