Well, the prequel trilogy describes perfectly the arc of tragedy. I don't subscribe to the fanboy thinking that says every Star Wars film should be The Empire Strikes Back.

That said, it was always the intention for the live action tv series to be darker and grittier than the films. Lucas's arrangement with Dave Filoni has worked perfectly on The Clone Wars so there's no reason why he shouldn't follow suit with the live action series (although he did originally say he'd direct the first season before handing over the reins).

For anyone still interested, this is on indefinite hold. They have 50 hours worth of material written but, until Lucas can figure out a way of making this for a fraction of what the film features cost (and apparently, the scripts dictate a production cost equal to the movies themselves) we won't be seeing this any time soon. Lucas fears by the time a cost-effective way has been worked out, the way American tv is with its obsession for reality shows, there won't be enough interest in it to make the show a viable prospect.

Damn shame. This could have been a winner.

Would be cool but doubt this will happen - needs some fresh creative blood to tell this story.

I don't believe so. The Clone Wars - which, according to director Dave Filoni, is directed by George Lucas in all but name - is now about to start its fourth season. It's been hugely successful, both artistically and commercially.

The live action tv series doesn't need fresh creative blood but Lucas won't go ahead with it until he feels the cimate is right and the budget is affordable.
