MOTHRA Flying Onto Blu-ray In The UK

Those of us living in the UK will be all too aware of the fact that most of the entries in Toho’s extensive library of giant monster films are hard to come by over here. Which is why the news that Mothra will finally be heading to Blu-ray in the UK should come as a welcome surprise.

The Blu-ray will be released by Eureka Entertainment as part of their Masters of Cinema series. This will be the first time Ishirō Honda’s 1961 classic has been available on home video on any format in the UK, and fans are bound to be excited. Both the original 101-minute Japanese version of the film and the shorter 90-minute international cut will be included on the Blu-ray, so that you can enjoy both versions of the film. While special features will include new audio commentaries from experts David Kalat, Steve Ryfle, and Ed Godziszewski, in addition to an interview with renowned film critic Kim Newman about the legacy of Mothra.

After the incredible success of Godzilla in 1954, giant monster movies were dominating Japanese popular culture, so Mothra was a natural progression in the hugely successful genre. It focuses on a team of scientists sent on an expedition to a remote Japanese island, where they discover a giant egg from which Mothra would later hatch. The film also stars Frankie Sakai, Hiroshi Koizumi, Kyōko Kagawa, Jerry Ito, and Ken Uehara, with Yumi Ito and Emi Ito also appearing as the two miniature fairies who would later go on to become known as the Cosmos in future films.

The standard Blu-ray edition of Mothra will be priced at £26.99, and will be available in the UK on November 16. The first 3000 copies will also include a limited edition hardbound slipcase and a collector’s booklet. So, don’t waste any time pre-ordering this from Euraka’s official website.
