That's not social commentary.
I remember when John Rambo came out a few years ago, people were so anxiously trying to add political subtext to it. "It's a great commentary on blah blah blah."
It's an ACTION MOVIE, trying to add subtext to Rambo is trying to add subtext to Commando.
I like that action buffs are trying to take a movie they love and add importance to it, but it's a dixie cup. Convenient disposable and that's about it.
I'm not buying it. |
You don't have to buy it. First Blood, commentary or not (I don't agree that there is) is not a shallow action movie. As for his speech at the end? It was really good. |

Okay, crunchy peanut butter over smooth peanut butter.
I prefer crunchy because it gives me something to chew on, but smooth is chunky too, so that's a quandary.

People think Ben Stiller is funny. He's not. I don't look for things that aren't there in First Blood. It's actually there. Like I said, I don't think it's as much a commentary as what it's trying to say is pretty obvious, but I do think it has more substance than any other Rambo film. One of the reasons why it's held up over all this time. |

And I couldn't disagree more. A cigar is just a cigar. Vietnam was in vogue to set movies in at that time and Sly did it with his film. That doesn't mean it has a social relevance automatically. No sell for this man. No sell.
