Has anybody here read any Jack Ketchum? I came across his name whilst looking at a list of splatterpunk novelists.
I don't know whether I have the stomach to read The Girl Next Door, knowing it was based on real events, but Off Season looks to be very much my kind of story.
Just wondered if we have any fans here and, if so, what do you think of his work? Stephen King rates him pretty highly, which should be good enough for anyone I reckon. |

He's very, very "hit-or-miss" with me (I am in the minority, mind you, as Ketchum's much-loved in the genre), but my two favorites of his are THE GIRL NEXT DOOR (one of my favorite horror novels of all time, in fact) and RED.

I've only read Red and Cover by Ketchum, in terms of novels. Cover is about a vietnam vet who lives in isolation in the woods, and has really bad flashbacks. These flashbacks lead to disastrous results for some campers.
I highly recomend it.
I plan to read Offspring and Off Season, and eventually the Girl Next Door and the Lost.
So I'd read up about these as well.

| Well, that's good enough for me. Jack Ketchum and Joe R Lansdale are the two writers I've been interested in familiarising myself with. The opinions I've read have encouraged me now to go and seek them out. Cheers. |

| The only one of Ketchum's books that I have read so far is The Girl Next Door which is excellent. As brutal as that book is, it's not as horrific as the actual case that it is based on, which you can read about in House of Evil by John Dean. I'm looking forward to reading Ketchum's other works. |

| I have read Offseason, Offspring, The Girl Next Door, The Lost and Peacable Kingdom and I have enjoyed each of them. I am currently reading Weed Species then I am moving onto Joyride. |

I think that was Jack Kilborn, not Ketchum. Been really wanting to read Afraid, though.
For Ketchum, I'd recommend starting off with Ladies' Night. Great fun, that one. |

I read that today it was a blast. Fast, fun and completely mental.
I also read his western novella THE CROSSINGS. That was brilliant. At only about 100 pages it was incredibly tight and moved like a bullet. One of his best, definitely.
Sadly, THE CROSSINGS is out of print and very hard (and expensive) to get. But since I have a Kindle I downloaded from Amazon it for about $4.  |
