Got it for Christmas and am only about 70 pages in. I'm enjoying it so far, but I still got a long way to go.

I got it about a week before Christmas, and I'm about 500 pages in.

Was a time when I could have finished this one in a week. But these days, I hate to say, I find it harder and harder to get through King's stuff.

He's one of the best, no doubt about that. Who am I to criticize the master? But God, someone needs to edit him. Those constant Maine euphemisms and parenthetical asides just kill the flow, pull me out of the story again and again and again.

Still . . . I'm enjoying it. I think I'm gonna end up liking this one a lot more than his last few (which I also liked, but it's been a long time since King has written anything that *blew me away*).

Yeah, it'd be nice if everyone wasn't constantly wearing chambray and talking about going "ass over tea kettle."
And drinking orange crush.

Agreed.

. . . and, despite what I said above, I've rarely touched the book since I posted that. It just isn't "hooking" me up enough to invest that much time in it. I haven't picked it up in well over a month, and have buzzed through probably a dozen other books within that timeframe, books that DID make me want to keep reading. Sad

Just finished this read today. First impression is that if you've read plenty of King before then there is really nothing new to discover here. All of his usual trademarks and expectations are present.

But, it's still a good read. Very, very short on the "horror" element, but chaos and the "evil that men do" run rampant.

As with most of King's work the build up and development progressively picks up momentum and then the climax smashes right through, but then... eh, the resolution really leaves much to be desired.

But the very scary and very eerie parallel between the city of Chester's Mill under the dome and Bush/Cheney America at the height of the global war on terror was fun to disect.

Does anybody else who has read this book think that Chester's Mill is populated by people with the dumbest names on Earth.
Its like the town of stupid names.
Romeo Burpee?
Lester Coggins?
Little Walter?!

It was an OK King book, good but not great. It worked as a decent commentary on the Bush/Cheney era as well as on the sort of hypocricy often found in conservative Christian evagelical types. However, the novel was bloated and I agree that some of the character names were pretty stupid.
