New guy here.
Just dropping my official "hello" to the community.
So as a new horror movie fanatic, what are the "essential" movies that I HAVE to see?
Start compiling the list here.
If enough people contribute to the list, we can make this a sticky for all the newcomers to read, and I will edit my welcome out of the post to be replaced entirely by the "essentials". |

| I think of "Gojira" as sci-fi more than horror. That's the excuse I'm sticking to for not including it on my list. |

Oh, I give you more credit than THAT.
It's not an "excuse", it's a "caveat".
or in contractual terms, a "proviso".
...in the meantime, I also add (just to piss off Gen Y pseudo H-wood wannabe exec know-nothings who will NEVER make any $$ off the following films...):
The House That Dripped Blood
Scream and Scream Again
Fiend Without a Face
The Beast With 5 Fingers
Ice Cream Man (for the unholy goofiness)
The Beyond (rather surprised THAT one ain't been mentioned but Meth gave you The Changeling so pari passu)
Ghost Story (seriously, MUST SEE)
Baron Blood
Black Sunday
Theatre of Blood
The Abominable Dr. Phibes (AND the sequel) |

I thought of adding these to my list as well, but I wanted to keep the list at 10 titles that someone who's never seen any horror would need to watch in order to have an idea what the genre is about (I tried to cover each sub-genre). If it was purely a list of my own personal essentials, it would be a much different list. |

I see your point, but I too am adding what I think amounts to an overall der riguer/metriculation exam.
My pissy ass poncy nonce PERSONAL list would, in fact, be 50 flicks long and not include some essentials I mentioned above. A VERY different list.
The OP/newbos asked for "essentials", "preferences". to my mind, that is what I have provided. |

d'accord.
speaking of which...
I do think in terms of "recent", the OP should check out Chronos (I prefer Blood and Donuts, but...)
If the OP wants to ever have cred on a Kaiju film he really needs to see the original Mothra and Rodan films, I think...
Plus, considering how beloved AIP will always be, I Was a Teenage Frankenstein shpould probably be on his/her netflix que. |
