Steven Spielberg Explains Why GOONIES 2 Hasn’t Happened… Yet

Steven Spielberg & Richard Donner’s The Goonies with Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Corey Feldman, Kerri Green, Martha Plimpton, and Ke Huy Quan turns 35 this year. And today, Spielberg explain why there hasn’t been a sequel… yet.

He says: “Chris, Dick, and I — and Lauren [Shuler Donner] — have had a lot of conversations about it. Every couple of years we come up with an idea but then it doesn’t hold water.”

For those that might not know, The Goonies is about a band of adventurous kids who take on the might of a property developing company that plans to destroy their home to build a country club. When the children discover an old pirate map in the attic, they follow it into an underground cavern in search of treasure but come up against plenty of dangerous obstacles along the way.

It stars Sean Astin as Mikey, Josh Brolin as Brand, Jeff Cohen as Chunk, Corey Feldman as Mouth, and Jonathan Ke Huy Quan as Data. Kerri Green joined them as Andy along with Martha Plimpton as Stef. John Matuszak also starred as Sloth Fratelli along with Robert Davi as Jake Fratelli, Joe Pantoliano as Francis Fratelli, and Anne Ramsey as Mama Fratelli.

The Goonies was directed by Richard Donner (The Omen) from a screenplay written by Chris Columbus (Gremlins) based on a story by Steven Spielberg (Jaws). Donner produced with Harvey Bernhard (The Lost Boys). Warner Bros. released it back on June 7, 1985.

The film sports a 75% approval rating over on Rotten Tomatoes with a Critics Consensus that reads: The Goonies is an energetic, sometimes noisy mix of Spielbergian sentiment and funhouse tricks that will appeal to kids and nostalgic adults alike.
