Distribution rights for Shin'ya Yamamoto's The Horrific Torture of Japanese Women (Nihon zangyaku onna gômon) - a.k.a. "Cruel Torture" - are now being offered for sale by Geta.
The screenplay for The Horrific Torture of Japanese Women was written by Genji Nakamura. The movie starred (listed order corresponds to order on Japanese video release artwork) Yukiko Tachibana, Yuki Minami, Serika Mine, Keiko Hase (cf. Keiko Hase - quite possibly the same actress), and Rina Nagisa.
Here's a description of The Horrific Torture of Japanese Women from Shin-Toho Pink Cinema Web (reader discretion is advised): "Otama (Yukiko Tachibana) is a 19 yrs old geisya who was born under a fisherman's house. Her regular customer, Kuroda, a lieutenant general, has sex with Otama in front of his wife Kane (Yuki Minami). Kane turns her face away. Being mad at Kane, Kuroda kills her and puts the blame on Otama. Otama gets humiliated and killed by a policeman. ¶ A farmer's daughter, Omitsu (Serika Mine), is sold to Cyobei [Chôbei], an owner of a brothel, and gets awful torture from the policeman. Time passed by and Omitsu's daughter, Omiyo (Keiko Nagatani [Keiko Hase]) approaches Chobei to revenge the policeman. ¶ This is a tragic story of women in three periods; Meiji, Taisho, Showa, who got torture. ¶ These women are tied up by rough ropes and opened their legs wide. Their pussies are toyed with knives and flame. An adult movie master, Shinya Yamamoto presents a bizarre torture world."

It's definitely great to finally see Shin Toho productions offered for Western distributors. I'm not sure anybody will have the balls to grab them but it's a start... My theory in regards to Shin Toho's exploitation output is that they somehow had to carve out a niche in a market dominated by the usually higher budgeted films from Toei and Nikkatsu. And they did that simply by upping the mean-spirited approach and nastiness.
I have not seen this particular Shinya Yamamoto film but I did write at great length about another of his Shin Toho movies, CRUELTY OF THE FEMALE INQUISITION, a searing look at vagina mutiliation throughout Japanese history!

Now this is something I'd love to get in DVD quality and with subtitles... The same also goes for a number of Hisayasu Sato (NAKED BLOOD, RAMPO NOIR) Shin Toho movies but I don't imagine HORSE, WOMAN, DOG ever getting a release in America. Even with all the pixels (which sometimes fill the entire screen, actually) I highly doubt it'd be legal there. |

| At least it sounds like this film doesn't tip-toe around it's subject matter. We know what we're going to get, which as already mentioned, is refreshingly honest. |

I asked the Pink Eiga guys about this film and about Shinya Yamamoto's works in general and they knew nothing about having licensed them, let alone any plans to release them in America. Instead, they're looking forward to releasing some funny pink comedies and dramas in 2010. |

To paraphrase Patton Oswalt, I want a movie to give me a little movie in my head as soon as I hear the title. Like "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" - as soon as you hear it, you get a certain level of entertainment from it already.
So, job well done, "Horrific Torture of Japanese Women"...job well done. |
