I've been stoked for ages. Great children's book. Brilliant director. Destined to be genius.

I sincerely hope the rumors aren't true, namely that the studio's fucking Spike Jonze over. Then again, brilliant minds (Jonze, David Fincher, Terry Gilliam, et al) are consistently fucked over by the studios.

Has anyone seen it yet? Are the glowing reviews spot-on?

I always saw this as a dark story when I was a kid. Did they make it too fuzzy and cute? Too Jim Henson?

Not at all, it remained fairly dark (The Wild Things threaten to eat him when he first arrives). I just think Max's home life was underdeveloped and somewhat superficial. The narrative felt too much like the Wizard of Oz with how they structured it (reminded me a lot of Return to Oz at one point). I felt like if they had had Max go back and forth between the Wild Things world and the real world, they could have developed his backstory more without having to tack more time onto the beginning (which dragged a bit as it was).

Keep in mind, though, this gripe is somewhat minor. I still really enjoyed it, it just didn't knock it out of the park like I had hoped it would.
