This Day in Horror: CREEPSHOW Premiered

On this day in 1982: Creepshow was released in theaters.

Although it first premiered on the festival circuit, Creepshow made its national theatrical debut on November 12th. The anthology film, directed by George Romero and written by Stephen King, is based on the old EC horror comics from the 1950s. As such, comic book-style panels fill the film, both in the composition of the live action scenes, and in the comic book illustrations between tales.

The film had a number of big names in the cast, including Stephen King, Ted Danson, Leslie Nielsen, Adrienne Barbeau, Fritz Weaver, Hal Holbrook, and E.G. Marshall. Stephen King’s son, author Joe Hill, starred as Billy, the little boy who was caught reading the Creepshow comic books in the film’s prologue and epilogue.

Creepshow was so popular it gained a sequel in 1987, and in 2019, Greg Nicotero launched a Creepshow  TV series on Shudder.
