It took 31 posts for someone to finally mention Freddie Mercury? You're all dead to me.

David Gilmour is without a doubt my favorite vocalist but Peter Gabriel is right there.

Kate Bush would be my favorite female vocalist.

Some of my favorites are:

Billie Holiday
Ella Fiztgerald
Louie Armstrong
Ozzy Osbourne
Freddie Mercury
Rob Halford
Luciano Pavorotti
Frank Sinatra
Dean Martin
Sammy Davis Jr.
Terri Nunn
Deborah Harry

heck there are so many, this is just a small list. Obviously I also like a large range of music.

This is always hard for me to answer because vocals are so different in style...moreso than guitars, bass, drums, synth, composition, etc.

>> For technical ability, I would have to go with (not including strictly opera/classical/neo-classical vocalists):

Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden, Samson)
Stu Block (Into Eternity, Omega Crom)
Rob Halford (Judas Priest, Halford, Two, Fight)
Matt Barlow (Iced Earth, Pyramaze)
Ronnie James Dio (Black Sabbath, Rainbow)

...it's hard to rank them, but I would say Bruce is probably the best technical singer of the bunch....and I friggin hate Dio, but I won't deny his ability.

>> For best vocalists (as a frontman in a band):

Ozzy Osbourne (Black Sabbath)
Phil Anselmo (Pantera, Down, Superjoint Ritual, Arson Anthem)
Robert Plant (Led Zeppellin)
Scott Wieland (STP, Velvet Revolver)
Paul Stanley (Kiss)

...this list is always changing for me, except for Ozzy.

>> For voice aesthetic (specific tone/pitch they like to sing in):

Michale Graves (The Misfits, Gotham Road)
Michael Buble
Jack Johnson
Peter Steele (Type O Negative, Carnivore)
Vince Neil (Motley Crue)

...oh man, does Vince ever suck live though. Ozzy would be in this category too, but I left him out because he was in the other category.

------
EDIT: LOL

After, re-reading this whole thread, I realize just how hard this actually is...sooooo many others mentioned in this thread that I agree with..way to many to list.

When it comes to singing, there's Frank Sinatra and then there's the rest of them.

Someone else who makes me want to hang up my hat and turn off my PA is Ella Fitzgerald.

Here's where I sound real old and out of touch, but macready, what kind of name is "Loopy" or "Danzig". Bloody longhairs, I bet I wouldn't be able to make out a single word those people sang. Give me Tony Bennett anyday, now there's a singer.

[Tongue only half in cheek]
