PET SEMATARY Producer Says Prequel More Likely Than Sequel

Mary Lambert’s film adaptation of Stephen King’s Pet Sematary, released in 1989, inspired a sequel; Lambert also directed Pet Sematary II, released in 1992. Despite the fact that the 1990s were a strange decade for horror, the sequel is actually better than you might have heard. With another adaptation of Pet Sematary set to hit theaters in less tha two weeks, it’s not too early to wonder: Could this be the beginning of a new franchise?

The question was put to Pet Sematary producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura by the folks over at Consequence of Sound recently, and the query elicited an interesting response. How about a prequel?

“I generally don’t start thinking about [sequels] until they’re a success, [but]I think if there’s anything here, there’s a prequel. I think if you look at the book, we didn’t cover all that stuff that happens before the Creed family moves in.”

Sounds like an amazing idea to me, especially if it features Jud Crandall (perhaps as a young man). With the buzz out of SXSW red-hot, chances are Pet Sematary will indeed be successful, so a prequel is actual very possible. I hope King will also approve. Time will tell.

Synopsis:
Dr. Louis Creed and his wife, Rachel, relocate from Boston to rural Maine with their two young children. The couple soon discover a mysterious burial ground hidden deep in the woods near their new home. When tragedy strikes, Louis turns to his neighbor Jud Crandall, setting off a perilous chain reaction that unleashes an unspeakable evil with horrific consequences.

Pet Sematary is directed by Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer and stars Jason Clarke, John Lithgow, and Amy Seimetz. Look for it in US theaters beginning April 5th.
