DEAD SPACE Creator/Director Looks Back on the Survival Horror Masterpiece

Back in October of 2008, the Halloween season was forever changed with the release of Visceral Games’ Dead Space, the sci-fi survival horror game that would later become the cornerstone of a mini-franchise. Players stepped into the heavy boots of Isaac Clarke, an engineer sent to the USG Ishimura after a distress signal is launched. Once he arrives, all hell breaks loose and Isaac is forced to face off against hideous abominations called Necromorphs.

In a new video interview, Ars Technica sat down with Dead Space creator/director Greg Schofield, where he opened up about the core mechanics they wanted to employ, the inspirations behind the title, and one particular moment that completely changed how the devs needed to work on the game. It’s a fascinating deep dive into a game that rightfully won award after award and has since become one of the premier titles in the survival horror world.

Now, we just need to figure out what it would take to get a Dead Space 4
