Something tells me that Johnson is full of shit. Not doubting the project is currently dead, but his reasons for it.

Look, Daredevil was drivel. Ghost Rider looked more of the same and worse, but for that reason I never got around to seeing it. So, isn't it possible that Johnson was handing in more shit and HBO wasn't going to fund it.

He may be claiming he was staying as true to the source material as he could, but it's still probable that his scripts still sucked.

But, alas, maybe this was meant to be. Preacher may only be meant for the comics medium and nothing more.

Johnson wasn't directing and he was following the source material word for word.

No suprise HBO got cold feet.

I think The Preacher series should be Snyder's next project. There's no doubt in my mind that if they adapted The Preacher books into either films or a television series that they wouldn't be a hit.

It likely wouldn't be a hit if they went "word for word" in the way Johnson described how he was approaching the project. As much as I love the series and how badass it really is, a good bit of it would not really work on the big/small screen. It would require an overhaul in certain aspects for it to translate. The overall plot, characters and theme could work, but the violence would definitely have to be presented differently because if you presented the violence in the same manner, then the tone would be off. On page the dark humour behind the violence works, on screen it wouldn't. It would definitely come across as just there for the shock value of it and ultimately a distraction from the really good stuff in the story. Some of the long, deep dialgue reminiscent of the mid-90's indie film craze (Tarrantino, Smith, etc) would just come across forced and condescending.

It's back on.

At least a movie version is.

Mendes is a marvelous director, and he's already done a bang-up comic adaptation with ROAD TO PERDITION.

Color me giddy with anticipation.
