Gary Dauberman’s SWAMP THING TV Series Will “Go Graphic with the Violence”

As a writer, Gary Dauberman is a rising star of the horror genre. He’s been a major force behind the scripts for 2017’s IT and 2019’s IT: Chapter Two, not to mention The Conjuring spinoffs Annabelle, Annabelle: Creation, and The Nun (the latter of which just hit theaters nationwide where it enjoyed a record-breaking weekend).

In addition to Annabelle 3, which will see Dauberman pulling double duties as both the screenwriter and director, he plugging away on a TV Series based on DC’s Swamp Thing. While superhero movies are hit and miss with horror fans, many genre aficionados have a soft spot for Swamp Thing; the comic was adapted for the big screen back in 1982 with Master of Horror Wes Craven at the helm and Scream Queen Adrienne Barbeau in a starring role.

As for what entertainment seekers can expect from a Swamp Thing TV series, Dauberman recently dished details with the folks at /Films:

“We always set out to make Swamp Thing as hard R as we could and go graphic with the violence, with the adult themes and make it as scary as possible. Because we’re doing it through the DC streaming service, they really pushed us, although they didn’t have to push hard, for us to go as extreme as we could. We really took our inspiration from the Alan Moore run in Swamp Thing, this landmark I think run. Fans of that series will know it gets pretty weird and extreme and scary. We really wanted to live up to that standard that Moore set up back in the ‘80s. Then, of course, it allows us, Swamp Thing himself looks incredible what Justin Raleigh and the guys over at Fractured are doing with the suit. So, it’s going to look amazing and less of the ‘man in suit’ that you’ve seen in the movie and the other TV show.”

For the uninitiated, here’s DC’s official bio for Swamp Thing/Alec Holland:

Alec Holland was an idealistic scientist who was synthesizing a top-secret chemical in his hidden lab in the marshlands. But after a bomb in his office explodes, the young scientist is murdered. Or so it seems. Because rising in his place is the Swamp Thing, a creature made of vegetation that’s absorbed Alec Holland’s memories, personality—and grief.

The monstrous Swamp Thing can control every iota of plant life on this planet, from the fungus on stale bread to forests of towering oaks. Superhumanly strong and grotesque, he can grow himself a full array of titanic bodies from even the tiniest sprout of green. A living embodiment of the power and terror in our environment, the Swamp Thing protects both humanity and the environment—usually from each other.

We don’t have a release date or a trailer for Dauberman’s Swamp Thing series, although IMDB states the production will premiere sometime in 2019. We’ll keep you posted as additional detail emerge. In the meantime, you can check out the synopsis and trailer for 1982’s Swamp Thing below.
