A novel by Dan Simmons
Just a bit from the book jacket..
" The men on board HMS Terror have every expectation of triumph. As part of the 1845 Franklin Expedition, the first steam-powered vessels ever to search for the legendary Northwest Passage, they are as scientifically supported an enterprise as ever set forth. As they enter a second summer in the Arctic Circle without a thaw, though, they are stranded in a nightmarish landscape of encroaching ice and darkness. Endlessly cold, with diminishing rations, 126 men fight to survive with poisonous food, a dwindling supply of coal, and ships buckling in the grip of crushing ice. But their real enemy is far more terrifying. There is something out in the frigid darkness: an unseen predator stalking their ship, a monstrous terror constantly clawing to get in."
I read it a few months back and I can't recommend this book enough. A wonderful read. Has anyone else read it? I would love to see this get made into a movie but it would cost a fortune to make I'm sure.
This would be perfect for John Carpenter or I think Larry Fessenden could pull it off as his studio debut after watching The Last Winter. |

Here I thought it was an appreciation thread for the Corman movie. I've always liked that one, even though most call it a stinker.
I hardly read any new horror as they all tend to be more of the same. Well, the ones I pick, anyway. This one sounds interesting, however. Now the big questions- Is there a "beautiful young scientist" in the group? Did he throw in "crazy guy who fucks things up for everyone"? And does "ominous quite guy who knows more but won't say anything until plot demands it" make an appearance?
I might check the bookstores tomorrow, but if I don't like it, I expect a full refund from you.  |

I'll gladly refund you the money if you don't like it. I know you will though.
No beautiful young scientist on board although there is a love interest and of course there's going to be a crazy guy, wouldn't be a horror novel without one but there isn't really an ominous guy among them.
Seriously, check it out, you will not be disappointed.
I'm not sure if its been released on paperback yet though. |

I started this, but within the first 20 pages-or-so I looked at the page count in front of me and decided "Nah!"
Although Simmons' CARRION COMFORT is one of the greatest horror novels ever written. |

I read this back when it first came out. It ain't bad! Definitely an oddball and unique bit of horror.
And don't give up; Simmons adds a lot of 'flavor', which ends in page bloat, but trust me that it's all good.
