Well, just about a year has passed since we last spoke of the Sam Raimi-helmed Oz: The Great and Powerful, and we’re still not sure how Dread worthy of a project it’s going to be, but quite a bit of news has been coming out lately so we thought we’d share it with all the Raimi (and Oz) lovers out there.

Zach Braff, Oz: The Great and PowerfulFirst up is word of a firm release date for the Disney property – March 8, 2013. Yes, that’s 2013. Definitely something to look forward to once we get through 2012 unscathed by those pesky Mayans.

Next are some casting updates. According to Deadline Zach Braff (pictured) is in final talks to play the role of Frank, the loyal but under-appreciated assistant to Oz (James Franco, who has replaced the originally rumored Robert Downey, Jr.), a charismatic circus magician who is treated as a powerful wizard after his balloon blows off course into Oz and the townsfolk want him to eradicate a Wicked Witch and bring peace. The Witches are played by Mila Kunis as Theodora, Michelle Williams as Glinda, and Rachel Weisz as Evanora. Joey King will play China Girl, a girl made of porcelain whom Oz takes under his wing after Evanora kills her family.

The film starts shooting in July in Michigan with Joe Roth, Josh Donen, and Grant Curtis producing and Palek Patel exec producing. Mitchell Kapner and David Lindsay-Abaire wrote the script, and it is, of course, in 3D.

Look for more soon … or not … depending on how wicked that darn witch turns out to be.
