Oh I fully intend to stick it through the rest of the season. If it doesn't grab me by then I probably wouldn't seek out any further episodes. _________________ Close the case before the coffin. |

The second half has some very good character driven episodes, but as an action packed hold your interest show... I don't think it ever had that.
They really screwed up the season finale...
Out of respect to Gus and anyone else who have not seen it yet, I won't discuss it, but needless to say, they really dropped the ball. _________________ Damn! |

Oh, I fully agree there. The finale was mostly crap. _________________ "Sigh. Malachi, Conan is a fictional character, Dungeon Masters are real, hard-working people..." - Chainsaw

I didn't have high hopes for it, but I was still let down. _________________ Damn! |

The mind reading lesbian episode isn't so good. I turned it off early. _________________ Close the case before the coffin. |

If so, 8 isn't bad, 9 is pretty good, 10 is alright, 11 has it's moments, 12 and 13 also have their moments, but the payoff is crap. _________________ "Sigh. Malachi, Conan is a fictional character, Dungeon Masters are real, hard-working people..." - Chainsaw

It's been a long week and I have a ton of laundry to catch up on. I might try to burn through the rest of the season tonight. _________________ Close the case before the coffin. |

Downloaded the first episode of season 2, but haven't watched it yet.
I'll tell you what I think of it later. _________________ "Sigh. Malachi, Conan is a fictional character, Dungeon Masters are real, hard-working people..." - Chainsaw

Overall, not bad...but not exactly great either.
The pace is still frantic, perhaps too frantic.
James Marsters is pretty good in this, and it looks like he'll be back later in the season.
Honestly, I wish they'd concentrate more on the sci-fi/action elements and less on the relationships. _________________ "Sigh. Malachi, Conan is a fictional character, Dungeon Masters are real, hard-working people..." - Chainsaw

I'm of the opposite mind, as I think it's the interpersonal relationships (as well as the unabashed sexiness) that give TORCHWOOD its very distinctive voice -- we've seen these various scifi/action scenarios aplenty before, but it's the interactions of the characters that keep it fresh and set it apart from its dreary American counterparts -- downplaying that aspect would make it boring. Without it, we'd have little more than a British version of the oh-so-dull STARGATE SG-1. Plus, I like the idea that, due to the job interceding so heavily on their pathetic personal lives, these people have focused their pent-up sexual tension on each other, and it's made them somewhat dysfunctional -- it's a nice, refreshing touch. There's certainly nothing like this on American television.
As for the ep, now THIS is what I'm talking about. Frankly, I thought "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang" was easily the best, most assured episode of TORCHWOOD yet. The cast has really gelled, and the addition of Marsters (nice to see that he's giving a real performance here and not just channeling Spike from BUFFY) into the mix was a fine move; I can't wait to see him return. The writing has taken a MAJOR upswing, the pacing was perfect, and the dialogue was excellent throughout -- there were tons of genuinely funny exchanges ("Oh yeah...help me, Obi Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope." - "If you need a new team member..." "No!") The show has finally found its groove -- while I was on the fence for the whole of the first season, I'm now a fully converted fan, and the preview for the rest of the season looks like a veritable buffet of fun. Bring on more!
4.5 out of 5.
Oh, and Eve Myles is still the sexiest gap-toothed vixen around. |
