When we left our heroes in Devil Survivor Volume Six, we had learned a terrible secret behind the Tokyo lockdown. If the demons currently trapped in Tokyo are not gone by the end of seven days, the government plans to eliminate the infernal threat by destroying the city. It was not entirely doom and gloom however, when the main characters realized they may have a way to get rid of the fiends. Yoshino Harusawa, better known as just Haru, has a song that summons demons as well as a partial one that might have the power to banish the demons.

Devil Survivor Volume Seven jumps right into the action with Kazuya Minegishi, Atsuro Kihara, and Yuzu Tanikawa planning with Haru on how to proceed. They have one single day left to rid Tokyo of demons before the government annihilates them, destroying everything and everyone else in the process. This intense pacing continues throughout the entire volume, and suits it perfectly. Shit has hit the proverbial fan and there’s really no time to stand around anymore. There are a ton of battles, and new information packed within Volume Seven, so be prepared for a rollercoaster ride.

There is a lot of incredibly dramatic and unpredictable stuff that happens in Volume Seven of Devil Survivor, including one ultra bizarre plot twist. We’d rather not give it all away, but let’s just say that the cloudy mystery surrounding one character in particular clears. One thing we will give away (Spoiler Alert) is that we finally figure out what torments Amane Kuzuryu. We knew in previous volumes that she harbors the angel Remiel, as well as something more sinister. This demonic presence inside her is finally fully revealed, and leads to an epic battle involving Kazuya and Naoya.

The biggest letdown of Devil Survivor Volume Seven is definitely the span of time it takes place in. At the beginning the main characters all make their plan, yet by the end of it they still haven’t put it into action. We still learn a lot about one character’s past, and there’s lots of action in this volume, so we can’t be too upset about this. However, it’s still a valid point that this part of the story doesn’t move forward much plot-wise.

A small point to hit on with this volume is that the explanatory splash pages continue. In the first six volumes of Devil Survivor, there were splash pages that elaborated on the origins of many of the demons and angels seen in the chapters. Volume Seven is no different, giving us further information on the most important creatures featured. It’s still a great addition to the volumes, helping flesh out the parts of the world the main narrative doesn’t have time to explain.

This is an action packed in-between volume of Devil Survivor. We learn a ton about one character in particular, and witness a lot of epic battles. However, we don’t move forward in time much, so there’s lots of drama still left to unfold. With one day left before Kazuya and friends must free Tokyo from the grip of demons, or be destroyed, Volume Eight of Devil Survivor is sure to be a heady one.
