Being sick of the shilling for the craptacular Chiller channel goin' on, 'round these parts, I have a question for the D. C. crew (Uncle Creepy. Foywonder, Johnny B., etc.). It's a hypothetical question. Here's the set-up:
Let's say that a MarK Cuban type wants to invest in a Dread Central channel. You guys call the shots. You're the ones who choose the content. You're the ones who plot out the program blocks, etc. They give you backing and the channel policy that content will be uncut. You have a modest budget for original programming, too. It's a channel that will be carried in HD and analog, and via cable and satellite.
That's the set-up. Given the history of where you guys busted your ass to try and get such a thing off the ground, only to have shit go south, here's the question (and perhaps a glance at what might have been, had things actually worked out at that other place):
What would you guys try to do with the channel and maintain the D. C. rep that comes with it? |

This was not abotu getting one going. I was actually more curious as to what they'd like to provide, if they had a real chance (as opposed to the previous debacle).
I've enjoyed DC since its CHUD days (in fact I couldn't stand CHUD and bookmarked their genre site when Rotten & Butane, etc. were keeping the fire lit. I moved over to the other site and enjoyed what they brought to the table there. Finally, when DC was reborn, I was happy to see it break free of its partnerships with those other organizations and run on its own.
DC has always reminded me of FANGORIA when it was good (i. e. before Toy Tmipone and Starlog became corporate cocksuckers and kowtow'd to Hollywood. Tony Timpone is the worst thing that has happened to genre coverage and not only did he help take the balls out of Fango, but everything that brand name is slapped upon sucks and anything he's invovled in turns to shit: his t. v. appearances "Defending" horror, his "testifying" at MPAA ratings boards for films like HARDWARE in trying to help boost their chances of securing an "R" rating, only to hurt the cause, etc.).
So, DC reminded me of the ecclectic, punk rock spirit of FANGO when it was good. They weren't kissing ass to work their way into cosy, lifelong positions, but grunts talking to fellow grunts. They didn't lobby to get on every talk show and present themselves as some kinf of authority, like FANGO and the Starlog retards did/currently continue to do. Films big and small got a fair shake and writers actually had personalities and could talk shop. DC has never presented itself as being above/better than its readers. FANGO, on the other hand - is one spiteful, condescending, intelligence-inculting corporate machine that woudl rather put its competitors out of business than improve their own lot. Dread Central's crew walked the walk and talked the talk, not fucking around like a Barney Rubble who does more harm than good; stumbling rather than walking the walk, and mumbling the talk. FANGO write aesthetic checks their phony asses can't cash; like Tony Timpone, etc..
So, the DC crew provide something that had been missing from tthe American horror front for a while. I don't kiss ass but I call things as I see them. I like DC. It's oen of the last vetigaes of semi-slick, professional, mainstream horror journalism left. While there are great fan sites and blogs that I hold in equally high regard; the phenomenon of a decent, mainstream horror outlet with credibility (in print or on the net) has shrunk, and D. C. is about it, imo.
Now, that exposition aside, with the craptacular Medusa touch of anything the FANGORIA name is slapped on, the limp-dicked FEARNET and even more craptacular CHILLER stinking up airwaves, and MONSTERS HD still elusive, I simply wanted to know what the DC crew would do if they actually had a chance (unlike the previous fiasco). Frankly, I don't think we'll be so lucky to see it happen, so I was curious as to what could have been/could be in the hypothetical sense. This was spurred on by the obscene amount of CHILLER shilling going on in this part of the board. I was curiious what some competent people would give us, if they had an outlet, and a fair chance to do it. It wasn't meant to be super serious, but I wanted to know. |

*Speaking STRICTLY for myself and not as a staffer here*
I personally don't see how it can be done any better than MONSTERS HD myself. I really really fucking wish I had that channel. Their programming is insanely good and varied.
Well...MONSTERS HD could be a little better. They could pick up Dread Central's NIGHTMARE ALLEY, giving us a nice cushy 20k budget per episode (for travel and expenses), and send all us staff to the four corners with cameras in hand!
