Grindhouse places #4 at the box officeWell, Grindhouse (review) sure didn’t do what we were hoping for in terms of box office money, but that’s almost par for the course with R-rated horror films nowadays. I guess it’s just that much worse when there are two of ‘em?

According to various sources, Grindhouse took home the #4 spot this past weekend, coming in under Blades of Glory, Meet the Robinsons and Are We Done Yet? (shudder), going to show there’s something about chocolate bunnies and zombified saviors that makes audiences crave a good laugh at the cinema rather than splattery goodness.

Though it was expected to do at least $20 million, Grindhouse only managed to bring in about 11, though the Weinstein Co. has high hopes for the DVD sales to make up for the $53 million they spent on it, planning to release both Planet Terror and Death Proof as separate, hopefully jammed-packed DVDs that I’m guessing will hit on or around Halloween this year.

Overseas, the films will also be rolled out apart from one another, at least in non-English speaking countries, so they’ve got a good chance to do well with foreign money as well.

Just do yourself a favor, please; if you’ve not already seen it, get your ass out there this week and give it your hard-earned money since it’s the first horror movie pretty much all year that’s earned every single penny of it. If you have seen it and enjoyed it as much as the DC staff, go see it again. Bring a friend. Just make sure we’re not sending the wrong message to the studio suits or we’re going to be choking on PG-13 crap for the next decade.

Keep your eyes open for a new Dinner for Fiends in which we all give some verbal loving to Grindhouse in the next few days!
