Godzilla Officially on His Way Back to the Big Screen

Rumors swirled late last year that Legendary Pictures, the company behind The Dark Knight, Watchmen, and this week’s Clash of the Titans remake, were in discussion with Toho about bringing the King of the Monsters back to the big screen. Today that news became official. Godzilla is back!
“Godzilla is one of the world’s most powerful pop culture icons, and we at Legendary are thrilled to be able to create a modern epic based on this long-loved Toho franchise,” said Thomas Tull, chairman and CEO of Legendary. “Our plans are to produce the Godzilla that we, as fans, would want to see. We intend to do justice to those essential elements that have allowed this character to remain as pop culturally relevant for as long as it has.”
That’s a quote from the Hollywood Reporter confirming a story today that was originally reported on by Bloody Disgusting about Legendary Pictures acquiring the rights to develop and produce a new Godzilla flick to be co-produced, co-financed, and distributed by Warner Brothers. While there are no other details or talk of any talent that might be involved at this time, the plan is to release the second and hopefully more successful stab at an American Godzilla in 2012 than we got with Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin’s unholy 1998 abomination. That shouldn’t be a problem as long as whoever they hire to write and direct don’t think they’re above making a giant monster movie and actually have some respect for the property. Ten bucks says it will also be shot in 3D.
