SDCC 09: Dexter Season 4 and Gallery Updates

In the course of updating our San Diego Comic-Con 09 photo gallery, which already includes hundreds of pictures (with more to come) of horror collectibles, costumed attendees, and celebrities both on panels or just walking the convention floor, we realized the newsy bits gathered during the presentation for Showtime’s “Dexter” went out via Twitter but never made it to the site. Allow us to correct that oversight immediately.

Along with watching the debut of a 3-1/2 minute Season 4 trailer (see it here), those attending the “Dexter” panel (consisting of series regulars Michael C. Hall, Julie Benz, and Jennifer Carpenter; their new co-star John Lithgow; and co-executive producers Melissa Rosenberg and Clyde Phillips) learned that 12 animated webisodes serving as a prequel to the series entitled “Dexter: Early Cuts” will be launching this fall. But first Dexter the video game is coming to iPhone & iPod Touch later this summer.

For those who came to the show by way of Jeff Lindsay’s excellent series of books that began with Darkly Dreaming Dexter, leading up to installment number four, Dexter by Design, which hits store shelves this September, “Dexter” the series and Dexter the novels will remain in separate universes with very different storylines. In other words, don’t expect to see any of the demonic elements that Lindsay introduced being portrayed on your television set.

As for Dexter and Rita’s baby, he will have already been born at the start of Season 4, and his name will be Harrison after Dex’s dad. Speaking of Dexter’s old man, James Remar fans should be glad to hear he’ll return for Season 4, helping his wayward son dig even deeper into his psyche.

Lithgow provided much of the panel’s levity, joking that his character, a serial slayer called the Trinity Killer, chose Dick Solomon [his “3rd Rock from the Sun” alter-ego] as his first victim; Michael C. Hall responded with “David Fisher was mine!” Although he’d already finished filming five episodes at the time of the SDCC, Lithgow had yet to act in a scene with Hall, and you could tell they were both chomping at the bit to have at it on screen.

You can bet we’ll be watching their relationship closely starting with the Season 4 premiere on Showtime September 27th. If you’re not quite caught up yet, Season 3 will be available on DVD and Blu-ray August 18.

More SDCC goodies await in the Dread Central gallery such as the Jonah Hex panel with Megan Fox, Josh Brolin, and director Jimmy Hayward; The Box‘s helmer Richard Kelly with Cameron Diaz and James Marsden; “True Blood”‘s Alan Ball and several members of the cast; the always lively “Supernatural” panel (albeit minus J&J this year); and an epic meeting of the minds between Uncle Creepy and the legendary Leslie Nielsen, who was in town to promote horror spoof Stan Helsing.
