I've just discovered Woody Allen and I've been attempting to watch all of his directed films. I think his comedies are perhaps some of the most intelligent ever, and his dramas are truly realistic and down to earth. His dialogue is some of the best, though. Here's the list of his films I've seen so far:

# Match Point (2005)
# Melinda and Melinda (2004)
# Hollywood Ending (2002)
# The Curse of the Jade Scorpion (2001)
# Small Time Crooks (2000)
# Sweet and Lowdown (1999)
# Deconstructing Harry (1997)
# Mighty Aphrodite (1995)
# Bullets Over Broadway (1994)
# Husbands and Wives (1992)
# Shadows and Fog (1992)
# Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989)
# Hannah and Her Sisters (1986)
# The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985)
# Broadway Danny Rose (1984)
# Zelig (1983)
# Stardust Memories (1980)
# Interiors (1978)
# Annie Hall (1977)
# Love and Death (1975)
# Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex * But Were Afraid to Ask (1972)
# Bananas (1971)
# Take the Money and Run (1969)

Most of his work is rather brilliant, but my favorites so far are "Crimes and Misdemeanors", "Annie Hall", and "Take the Money and Run".

He has a rather bleak view of fame and really does spoof it, celebrities and Hollywood, and it's not just his art. Allen is known for being very anti-Hollywood. Many of his films are based around human relationships and examining life and god or lack thereof.

Anyone a fan?

I like Annie Hall. It's probably one of the best written comedies you'll ever watch.

I see by your list you haven't hit "Manhattan" yet. That's one of the top 5 - easy - alongside "Stardust Memories," "Crimes and Misdemeanors," "Annie Hall" and maybe "Hannah and Her Sisters." I'm not a big fan of the DreamWorks ones ("Small-Time Crooks," "Jade Scorpion," "Anything Else," and the abyssmal "Hollywood Ending"), but he's still the greatest living American writer/director.

I too like Woody Allan. There are a few on your list, like Match Point and The Curse of the Jade Scorpion, but from the dozen or so I've seen, the one I'd recommend that in't yet on your list, other than Manhattan, is Anything Else.

I agree. I didnt like it the first time I saw it. Caught it on cable a few years later and loved it.

I'd have to say out of all of his films the one I constantly go back to is "Crimes and Misdemeanors". It's the perfect exploration of a man's ability to commit a horrible crime, sub-consciously sabotage himself, and be ruined by it forever.

I liked Small Time Crooks, and hated all the other ones. His Dreamworks films aren't that good. They're too goofy for a man who has a grasp on dialogue and characterization.

Ah. Match Point was disappointing for me, and Jade Scorpion I thought was one of his unfunniest movies since Hollywood Ending.

Sleeper is a good one also.

My uncle keeps raving about that one, but I still haven't grabbed ahold of it.

From what I've seen my favorites were ZELIG, BULLETS OVER BROADWAY, and MIGHTY APHRODITE.

SMALL TIME CROOKS and BROADWAY DANNY ROSE were good as well.

I'll have to check out CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS.

I thought Mira Sorvino was excellent in "Mighty Aphrodite". It's a shame she could never reprise that skill in future films. "Zelig" I'm not a fan of, and "Bullets Over Broadway" was fun.

"Small Time Crooks" was okay, and "Broadway Danny Rose" was one of my favorites.

"Crimes and Misdemeanors" is tied with "Annie Hall" for my favorite Woody Allen film. It helps that they both have replay value.

I like old school Woody Allen before he started taking himself too seriously. My favorites are Bananas, Sleeper and Love and Death. I showed Love and Death and Bananas to my fiance, who was only familiar with the Deconstructing Harry-era Woody Allen, and converted him. I think his exact words were, "Jesus, I can't believe he didn't use to suck. What the hell happened?" Sick Boy's theory, man, beautifully illustrated.

"Deconstructing Harry" and "What's Up, Tiger Lily" are two favorites. I haven't taken the full-on Woody plunge just yet, but I will eventually. I have to memorize every Marx Brothers movie first.

I've only seen Take the Money and Run so far and I bought a copy of Manhattan at a Salvation Army a year ago but never got to watching it yet, I think I might just go do that later.
