Plaza and Balaguero Want REC Respect

REC review!Paco Plaza and Jaume Balaguero, the men who brought us the cinéma-vérité delight known as REC (review), had a few choice words recently for Hollywood, Americans, and Quarantine.

Harping on the same strings a few of us have been strumming since Quarantine, the American remake of Spain’s REC, was first announced, the filmmakers revealed to Fangoria that they are not happy with how everything is going down in the States. On the notion of the remake downpour that has swept Hollywood’s originality away for so many years, Plaza remarked, “There’s a brutal lack of ideas. Personally, I would prefer them to release our film subtitled; it seems that (American cinema-goers) just don’t like reading that much.

I agree that the mainstream won’t pack theatres for a subtitled film, but what about marketing it in a different fashion and giving REC a run at the art house and indie movie houses? The duo would surely like that, but since it may not be in the cards, the best they can do is make people aware of their opinion of the remake and hopefully get more interested in the original.

John Erick Dowdle’s stab at REC will be in theatres this October.
