Exclusive: 6 Quick Wrong Turn 6 Questions for Actress Sadie Katz

In Wrong Turn 6: The Last Resort, Sadie Katz plays an impeccably inbred sex kitten with not only an ax to grind, but many, many people to kill.
Dread Central: First of all, I have to say I really enjoyed your writing when I saw the movie Scorned. Very clever, bitter stuff! Were you able to ad lib or change any of the dialogue for your character in Wrong Turn 6?
Sadie Katz: Thanks for that! Scorned was wickedly fun to write. Frank Woodworth wrote a really clean script in terms of writing… there wasn’t really need for ad libbing. There’s a couple of juicy fun lines I loved delivering – one of my favorites, “Don’t you fret; you’ll be in me soon enough.”
DC: What was it about playing Sally that especially appealed to you? There’s a lot going on, from the physicality of it to the psychological aspects.
SK: I don’t want to give away too many spoilers here, but Sally’s really one of the most complicated characters as far as back stories goes in a horror. She’s literally a cat in heat who’s dying to mate and have some kittens. She’s intensely loyal to her family to the point of… well, let’s just say she believes in keeping it in the family. Do you see what I’m saying here? I was absolutely stoked to play her because she’s just got all these levels, and every day we filmed I was trying to squeeze as many levels as I could into the dialogue and scenes I had. I loved that challenge. I was totally grateful to not just play a one-note female who was either running from the killer or a killer who just killed for blood. As an actor to get to play a character like Sally, it’s a gift… one you hope you don’t fuck up.
DC: Taking Wrong Turn 6 out of the mix, what’s your favorite one of the franchise, and what do you love about it?
SK: Everyone says the first one because it started them all. Eliza Dushku is one of my favorite actresses because I was a “Buffy” and “Angel” super nerdy fan. So of course that would be my absolute favorite. I’ve read fans compare the others to the first though, and that’s sorta a crazy thing because horror franchises don’t really work that way… I mean, you can’t just keep duplicating the story again and again because why bother? I’m also a fan of changing the environment slightly in every Wrong Turn in some of the same ways “American Horror Story” has switched their whole set-up. So, that being said, I really enjoyed number 5 because the kills were absolutely brutal… the ending gave me nightmares.
DC: I know this isn’t a horror-related question, but I just can’t help but ask… “Nipples and Palm Trees”? What’s that about? (Aside from the obvious…) Who do you play in it?
SK: This is my favorite question. It’s a raunchy sex comedy about a loser looking for love in Los Angeles. It was shot for next to nothing by the super talented Dylan Reynolds. I’m the female lead [with] Matt James, who actually played Merl for “Angel” fans, and Akihiro Kitamura, who was in Human Centipede. Hulu actually just picked it up this week and dubbed it a ‘Cult Film Comedy’ so it’s found an audience. A couple of bands have named themselves after the movie. And yes, there’s a lot of nipples in the movie… mine included, but the title was a gimmick; at the heart it’s a love story. Everyone gets a lot of shit for the title… well-deserved. I think it’s genius.
DC: Since you’ve now written a thriller script that you saw all the way through production and release, do you look at potential roles differently than you used to?
SK: I think I tend to look at filmmakers a little closer. I mean this in the nicest way; I can tell if someone really knows what they’re doing or not. I mean, the worst thing you can do is get involved with a project that loses funding, doesn’t get finished, or even worse doesn’t get distribution. Right now it’s like the Wild West of making films, and I’m surprised how many scripts I have or auditions I go to where I kind of know the film won’t ever happen. I know this is going to sound so insane coming from a female, but if I read a horror script and there’s not any huge names and there’s no nudity, I’m asking, “Why isn’t there any nudity?” I’m thinking how’s this film getting distribution… how can we all make sure the film is successful and gets sold? Look, if no one buys the movie, I don’t care if I get paid or not. I’m going to be bummed out for all involved if we aren’t all celebrating the release.
DC: What’s next on the horror agenda for you?
SK: I’m in a film that just wrapped, State of Desolation, which is directed by Jim Towns, also starring Jamie Bernadette, Dominique Swain, Craig Stark and Jessica Morris. It’s a very clever take on the zombie genre, post-apocalyptic and very sexy.
I’m also back at the computer writing again about a woman on the edge…which seems to be what I prefer to write about. You can draw your own conclusions about that one.

Synopsis
